Best way to clean engine bay?
What is the best way to clean the surfaces of the engine bay? I've heard of steam-cleaning, but obviously I don't have that capability in my garage. I was thinking of using those Armor-All Wipes because I've used them in the past and I figured they were safer to use then spraying some form of cleaner all over everything. Can anyone chime in on this and recommend a method? |

I simply go to the local $3.00 DIY car wash.

That's why I thought the wipes would work...minimal liquid on all the surfaces

Hmmm... well the engine bay is designed to get somewhat wet (rain, etc). I use a light coating of Gunk Engine Degreaser. I then mist the bay with water and wipe dry. I then wipe the hoses, covers, etc. with 303 Aerospace.

The true automobile enthusiast have always taken the longer more detailed route in the care of his pride and joy. However, do you honestly believe that a business or service department that handles hundreds of cars a week and has a two week plus appointment backlog does the same. Every shop I've worked for , managed or visited fires up the steam cleaner or pressure washer and has at it when it comes to cleaning the engine compartment and undercarraige. Care is taken not to saturate any of the electronic components even though they are sealed against moisture intrusion. Remember. These components are exposed to the elements of vastly different climates and driving conditions around the world. How else would your engine compartment get so dirty in the first place.

I never understood cleaning the engine compartment, it's an engine, it should be dirty.
