X5 Key replacement
3 weeks earlier after receiving my bill from BMW Lebanon, i decided it would be the last time i would ever take my X to the dealership for ANY kind of fix ... WHY ?? Passenger window fix : 700 $ Hand brake Replacement : 1000 $ As for my keys, i use one for remote keyless entry and the other for turning the car on, they told me they keys would cost 400 $ each and they will have to ship them from germany ! Are these reasonable prices ???? Anyway, i decided i will change the keys myself. So i saw this : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...Q5fAccessories Wich is an Un-cut key that can be cut to match my keys by any locksmith. The programming of the remote can be done using one of the folowing methods : http://www.programyourkeys.com/BMW_X...ogramming.html However, what i wanna ask is there any way i can program the transponder ship myself in the remote to be able to turn on the ignition ??? If i can't do indy shops have computers to program the transponders ?? If this fix works i would save 350 $ :s Thanks Moe

Almost positive that you would need a shop to reprogram the car to accept the key. Some indie shops have the abilitly to do so.
I would also check with a locksmith before buying the key, as I doubt "any locksmith" would have the machine to cut a key for your X5. |

...from all my reading here, you will need a BMW dlr to
program your new key, regardless of that key source. You can get a non-authorized key to manually work the door lock but it will not start your car; thus, not really the option you are looking for. From numerous posts here, replacement keys are in the $150-$200 range here in the states, so your local dlr is bumping it up a bit... and, that your dlr is supposed to do the programming on any replacement key; they don't come from Germany or anywhere, already "programmed". Here's a thread that talks about your situ: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...placement+keys GL,mD

Why do you need a set of new keys? Is it because the battery is dead? I think I saw a thread about replacing the battery inside - but you have to do some cutting.

So I bought one of the ebay specials too got it cut took it to the dealer and they told me the chip inside was out of a 5 series and that they cannot reprogram it to start the ignition just unlock the doors as others have mentioned. The issue I'm having is not a battery I just bought the truck used only came with one key. So I was reading the other post and I just wanna get this right bottom line if you don't buy the key from the dealer there is no way to get it to start the ignition, correct?

aklauz ... CORRECT !!! Thats what i also found out ... UNLESS you raplace your whole remote system but if you want the original remote system + key the dealer is the only and most expensive way to go ... Good luck
