To maintain a battery....maybe.

To charge a battery....I'd fork over the the money to get a charger that would charge at a higher rate. Then again, if you have the time to wait I guess its an alternative.

I had used both front and back (trunk) cigarette lighters as well as the jump start terminals. If you want to use the cigarette lighter, you'll need to buy the optional cigarette plug as the CTEK charger doesn't come with one standard.

Are those good to boost system voltage for DIS programming?

They are really trickle chargers. You should use a full size charger for something like that. Even BMW specs a different charger for programming work (a $925 Deutronic unit!).

Is there "homeowner" edition that doesn't have $925 tag and can be used for that purpose?

I'd have to check, but in general you need to have one that can provide 14.8 volts and 10% charging ability above the capacity of the battery, so for a 90Ah battery you need a unit that can deliver 100 A.

V&H MultiCharger 750
Deutronic DBL-430
Deutronic DBL-800

are the three BMW currently specs.

I believe that is because BMW has switched to AGM type batteries to eliminate the need for a vent tube to the outside of the vehicle. AGM batteries apparently need 14.7 volts to get a full charge.

If you were to deliver 100 amps to a 90ah battery for any period of time, if it didn't overheat and explode it would certainly be damaged.

Even the CTEK 7002 charger, which is designed for charging batteries up to 150 AH, and maintaining batteries up to 225 AH, only delivers 7 amps at maximum output.

P.S. I believe the "10% rule" is not 10% above the AH rating, but rather 10% OF the AH rating, as a recommended maximum charge rate to avoid overheating the battery

That is not the charging rate. Don't confuse the two.

"Charging Procedure: Battery charging must be performed using an approved battery charger (recommended charging unit: Deutronic DBL 430) at a constant voltage up to max. 14.8V. For an optimized charging procedure, the ambient temperature should be between 60°F and 75°F. Under these conditions, the battery can be considered fully charged when the charging current has fallen below 2.5 Amps.Charges below 60°F should be avoided if possible, since the capacity of the battery to take up current is reduced and the charging time is extended considerably. However, if provisional charging below 60°F is performed, the charging voltage must be set to 14.8V. Charging shall be discontinued no earlier than when the charging current falls below 1.5 Amps.

Be sure that the charging amperage has been set at 15%-20% above the amp hour rating of the battery. Since the Deutronic DBL-430 is only adjustable in amperage increments of 10, it may be necessary to round up to the next higher amperage setting. Failure to do so will result in an undercharged battery. For a 90Ah battery, set to 110A and for 110Ah, set to 130A."
