Rusty brake rotors: Poor Braking/ Pulsating

here's the deal, my X5 has been sitting outside for the past 3 months and just yesterday it was actually driven for >10 miles. I noticed the brake rotors are now slightly rusted and rough at the surface. Before leaving it standing for 3 months the rotors were clean as a whistle and rust free. Braking was strong and smooth. Now braking is poor and even pulsates a bit while braking. I took it around town and the rust is minimized and braking is stronger now, but it's still not perfect as it was 3 months ago. will this go away as I continue using it, or should I replace all pads and rotors now, even when they are less than 5k miles old.

Jay

could take 1000 miles of driving to get brakes as clean as before
it is possible to have rotors skimmed .
the pulsating could be where pads contacted rotors for 3 months .

You may want to try bedding the pads again to remove the remaining rust.
Instructions for bedding in your brakes

Great suggestion! Go out and hammer 'em and they'll be like new.

Good advice!! I will start bedding them in after work today. So far just driving around town the rust is less especially on the rear brakes.

Re-bedding the brakes is a good idea but I'd wait until most of the rust is off first. The rust may interfere with the pad material transfer. Try hard breaking a few times when ever the brakes are cold. Hopefully the pads will operate more in abrasive mode when cold to take off the rust.

I'm resurrecting this one because my daughter came home with the 2009 30i and was complaining about poor braking. The X sits in the parking lot at college, and sure enough all rotors had rusty surfaces. So I took it out and just pounded the brakes, stopping hard from 60 to 70 mph - light traffic this time of the evening. The feel improved, but when I got back every rotor was still not cleaned up, at least the side I could see. I would have thought that 8 or so hard stops would have done the trick, but the rotors still are not shiny clean as before when the car was garaged and daily driven.

Could it really take 1000 miles to clean up? Again, all rotors look about the same.

If you are stopping hard from 60 to 70 mph, I think you are pushing on the WRONG pedal.
