where's the mileage stored?

Is the mileage stored in the instrument cluster? And if so, if the cluster is replaced, will it show when the original cluster is put back into place? Fill me in...

it is stored in many places, ( even on the key, yes the key )
the new cluster will show the original miles when programmed.

No can do...you'll get an error message if you don't program the new cluster. Also as stated before...the key doesn't lie. The next time you go in for service, ask your SA to let you read the screen once he puts your key in the reader. Man you'll be amazed at the information the key stores. It almost like having big brother watch you as you drive..........Phil

You'll still have to program the cluster...yes even the original one. Once you disconnect it and drive a mile, it's out of sinc........Phil

so is this an impossible task, or just one that requires a buddy at the shop?

In the past before computers, we can do it. But now with all the hi-tech, I think this is an impossible task.

why do you want to freeze the odometer anyway?
if any of the components are out of sync, it might show a sign of "odometer rollback" then you will have a problem when selling or trading it, not worth the risk, imo

if u buy a used clusted ( dont get it programed) swap out the original and put in the used and drive your ass off... when u want to put the original one back in it will have your old k showing. now the one thing u will have to change is the head light switch the milage is stored in the cluster and in the head light swich.(just make sure u buy a new one not a used one) if bmw asks why u changed the head light switch.. LIE
and one more thing change the switch your self or get a shop to do it for u (NOT BMW)..
