Steering wheel lock up

I dunno what happened but i was driving one night and when i made a right turn in the middle of the turn the wheel locked up. i dident no what to do but i stopped the car in the middle of the turn and turned it on again, drove down he block and pulled over to check if something was blocking wheel or see somethign out of place, but nothing. its been 2 days now and it hasent happen again. anyone have any ideas what could of happened? i think i was luck this dident happen on the high way or i wouldn't of known wat to do.

The physical steering lock is actuated by the key in the ignition switch. If it straight up locked where you couldn't turn it at all as if you had the key out, well.. you can see in this link the lock system.

If it just got hard to turn like something was binding it would most likely be the double joint in this link.

i think the steering wheel locked up but i was still able to turn just a little bit, i dont like the looks of this =/

If you were still able to turn a bit it shouldn't be the column lock... that would be the first time I heard of that problem anyways. When driving do you ever notice the steering getting harder/easier/harder/easier when turning? Like there are points of binding in the steering while turning?

It is the double joint on my X5 4.4 that is causing this problem as Weasel described... easy, hard, easy hard, and occasional so tight, the wheel will not return to center in turns....

I found a thread on the 5 series where a guy just doused the joint in WD40 and that made his problem go away.

I tried it and it worked.

With the V8 in the way, it was very tricky and messy, I had to use penetrating spray with the jet stream, and just aimed for the joint and used about 1/4 can, then rotated the wheel (while the front was jacked up), sprayed more, again and again until I had a mess in the driveway.

I think the joint is so close to the exhaust heat, the lubrication dries out, and makes the steering ujoint double joint coupler bind, stick, etc...

Could also be something failing with your clock spring. Imagine if the ribbon cable within the clock spring got bound up for some reason while turning.

Also the clock spring is two plastic circular pieces sandwiched together with one side staying stationary and the other side turning with the steering wheel. If those two pieces got caught up on each other while turning, they could cause for a momentary blockage in the ability to turn.

The clock spring is super fragile, you could turn right through it and never knew it jammed.

So, if you were able to steer out of the corner, that says the steering didn't lock
Maybe the resistance required to steer changed.
If you are low on power steering fluid or there is another problem in the system, you might have lost the power assist. Or the double joint mentioned earlier.

In my case the ribbon cable from the clock spring came out, wrapped around the column and hung up my ability to freely turn the steering wheel.

The clock spring itself is fragile but the ribbon cable within it is strong.

I knew it was my clock spring cable because I could audibly hear the cable binding up in there. So if he hears the strange sound of a paper-ish sound coming from the column when he turns, then most likely it is his clock spring. If he doesn't hear a noise then disregard my rant.

Wow, I watched a friend break one without even feeling it. His ribbon cable was stretched out to the max and he kept turning. The steering rack was out of the car so the column could spin as far as he wanted, including turning further than the clock spring could
