Anybody changed the oil breather pipes?
I changed my camshaft sensor the other day and took off the plastic cover on top of the engine to gain better access to it, but then discovered two pipes near the bulkhead above the intake manifold had literally melted into mush. I'm trying to replace them but there is one that I cant get access to to get a screwdriver, nor socket (with one UJ-may try two next time) on the jubilee clip to undo it to release the rest of the pipe that is left on the engine. Its right down the back underneath the bulkhead. Has anyone had any experience, or would like to make any suggestions? Its a 2001 4.4... Thanks |

I had mine changed, it seemed to make the car run a bit smoother. They just get soft after time, did it set off any codes?

the bulkhead is easy to remove to give more access .
there are write-ups on the forum about removing that difficult hose |

Kingcon, I dont think it has set off any codes, as there have been codes for other things like my camshaft sensors. Like you have expereinced I too think it will run smoother once the pipes are done.
Amacman, do you know where these write-ups are on the forum? I've already run a search or two containing the words 'hoses, oil, and breather', but nothing comes up. Do you know where there could be any info concerning the removal of the bulkhead? It looks like a few bolts here and there on the front but I'm reluctant to start undoing things incase I have to start pulling the car apart, and then the dark catches up with me, and I have half a car left!! Thanks for any info you can supply... |

If there are these writeups you speak of, where are they then, because I cant find them?! I looked before I wrote this post (to save me from the usual 'do a search!!!' bombardment), and I looked after-there is nothing. |

Hoses are easy to replace, so is the oil seperator with one exception....the bottom oil seperator house. But that's if you work on the seperator. Xoutpost.com - View Single Post - Can you identify this hose for me? (Pic)

Thanks very much Art, very informative. And thanks to 'X5 in AK' for the original post that explains the hose replacement procedure.
Thank you both, I can now get it done! Just a quick question..... I have completely removed (minus the bit under the bulkhead) the gooey leftovers of what used to be the hoses, but there seems to be no oil leakage from the separator-is this normal, or is the separator blocked/busted? Ian |

Hey Ian,
I don't think that the seperator is full with oil unless the return is blocked. So you shouldn't have oil gushing out of it when hose removed. Seperator's job is to capture the oil from beneath the valve cover and return it to the oil pan. So the oil will leak with engine running. It wouldn't hurt to clean the seperator out IMO, since your hands are dirty already by now. It will take some time though, not a 10 minute job.

Thanks again Art, looking at the gunge build-up in and around the inlets/outlets of the separator it'll be simpler and more effective (I dont know if its working properly or not) to just fit a new one.
Though looking at the posts regarding the replacement of the O.S it would seem its not the easiest of tasks, but I'm going to do it anyway. And as you say, I'll already have my hands dirty!! Ian |

Yes, I would replace it too if you have a new one ready. It has a diaphragm inside, and just a cleaning would not help it if it's torn. Good luck man! Take some pics if you can and post them here for us to make this $1000 + dealer job an easier DIY.
