(devil's advocate)

You get a hold of your spare key. What? You didn't take the time to order a spare key from BMW when you first purchased your vehicle? So, all this time...knowing that you only had 1 key...you rolled the dice...taking the chance that if something happened to your one & only key...that you'd cross that bridge when the day came...instead of doing the right thing, and at least order one of the inexpensive non-remote spare key?

(/devil's advocate)

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see your original post above since it was on another page...but do you have a spare key? If so, if you can get power supplied to the vehicle per the info suggested below...you can insert the spare key into the driver's door lock cylinder and try to initiate the convenience open feature (turn & hold the key in the counter clockwise position) and lower the windows.

This will allow you to reach in and PRESS the central unlock button (on the center console)...then PULL TWICE on one of the interior door handles...which should go around the double lock feature if your build date is 9/99-up.

Help us help you better by creating a signature that includes your model/model year/build date. There are enough differences during the production run from 1999-2006 that there may be multiple answers or suggestions based on where your vehicle falls within the production range, or the model or model year.

If you locked the vehicle with the key, it is double locked...which means that the doors won't open from the inside either. This is an extra safety precaution in the event a thief breaks your window...they will have to crawl over & through the broken glass to get inside the cabin for things they can't reach.

If you have a spare key, you can try hooking up power (jumper cables or a battery charger) to the positive battery cable connections on the alternator or starter...then grounding (the negative cable). You may have to remove an underpanel to gain access. (see diagram below)

If you have a spare key, once power is connected, you can insert it into the driver's door lock cylinder and turn the key to the electronically actuated position (45° angle). And if you have a spare key, you can obviously insert the key into the door lock cylinder and turn it 90° to the MANUAL UNLOCK POSITION (turn counter clockwise until the door pin rises)...and bypass all the above drama.

(again, not knowing your model/model year/build date...you may have an air-cooled alternator...but the positive battery cable still attaches to it)

After a couple of hours it was getting cold and dark so we had to resort to breaking the passenger window. Now I'm going to be finding little bits of glass every time I vaccuum for the next 2 years. Lucky me, I'm now in the market for a passenger window...anyone have one available? Thanks for all the suggestions.
Holding the unlock button down (extended hold activates power windows to roll down) didn't work? Alternatively a simple plastic wedge at the top right corner of the door frame will allow enough room for a coat hanger to enter and activate the button in the center console, or open a door latch.

eBay has plenty of X5's being parted out for new glass - sorry it went the way it did

Problem was the key cylinder was broke. Was able to activate the unlock mech. with long semiflex rod inserted between door and frame. Thinking about installing a hidden microswitch. However, i've owned the car 10 years and this is the first time it has happened. I had just replaced the battery in the key fob I was using, and it worked for about a week...............it was just dumb luck that the key cylinder broke at the same time.
