Safelite / Stealer Experience

Had my X broken into . Sorry for the long post, but had to get this out.

My wife went to the mall after work, shopping by herself, for a few things for my niece's birthday. So she goes to put some of the things she purchased back int the X, and then proceeds to another store to pick up the rest of the things she needed. Came back 15 minutes later and some a$$hole breakes the small fixed window in the rear door to get in the X (with the holidays nearing please dont take things to your car and go back to continue purchasing at other store cause you never know whos looking for an easy score) Anyways, the punk forgoes the things she bought and goes for her bag, which thankfully she had nothing in there but some dirty tupperware containers from lunch.

So obvioulsy the mall doesnt have security cameras in the parking lot. So we call up the cops to file a report, call up the insurance company and file our claim since we have glass coverage. Everything goes smoothly, the insurance company tells me they will send Safelite to fix the window. I agree, but remind them that I want OEM glass replacement, and they tell that I will have to pay about $78 dollars for the OEM glass. I agree and schedule everything.

So the next day the guy from safelite arrives at my job about 11am, I direct him to my X in the garage, give him the keys, I explain to him that I paid to have oem glass installed, he says no problem, and he states he should be done in about 2 hours. So I leave him to it. A few hours go by, I go check on the guy and the door is basically taken apart and glass is not in yet. So I ask him if hes gonna take much longer, and he states "Some of these BMWs are more difficult than others, but i will be done before you get ready to leave" So whatever I let the man do his thing. I already have a bad feeling, but if I stop the guy I might get screwed in case I want to file a complaint/claim about the repair. So about 5:30pm the guy calls me up and says he's done. I go to check on the repairs and notice blue tape all over the glass and door, the guy tells me not to touch the glass or open the door, or wash the X for 2 days. Im like "ok" and I sign the work order slip after carefully reading it. He states if there are any issues to please call them.

So impatient that I am about my X when it comes to repairs. I immidiately check the door and the door lock doesnt work and the handle is broken, the leather is scratched and the panel is craked, the window shades installed wrong and non functioning, and the exterior window molding are all scratched and bent out of shape, and to top it off the guy put in aftermarket glass that didnt even come close to the OEM look. I go WTF and call the insurance company, they say they cant to anything and that I have to file a claim with safelite, so Im even more pissed off at this point. I get the insurance company to do a 3 way conversation with safelite. Safelite states to please bring the X to the shop that was assign to do the repairs to asses the damage and repair it. I tell them hell no, if you want to check it, I will take it to another safelite shop but that BMW is going to do the repairs.

They agree, I take it to the other safelite shop, the manager checks the exterior visible damage, then proceeds to take the door panel off. We find a wad of glue all over the door panel and door frame because the damn fool that changed the glass didnt know how to put the panel back on, so he glued it in place. While all of this is going on my wife and I are taking pictures and documenting all this. The manager states that the person who did the work, or the shop manager should be fired for the damage caused. He proceeded to call Safelite's insuarance claims dept and told them that he exmained the car and they can not do the repairs and that they have to pay to have a BMW shop repair the extensive damage to the door. He tells them that even though safelite could have done the replacement of the glass, the guy had f***ed up the door so bad that he would not touch it.

They finally agreed to pay for the damages and at a shop of our choosing. So took the X to the stealer. The tech looks at the door and goes WTF happened. I told him not to even ask. So they took the door completely apart and examined everything. They had to end up replacing nearly everything on the door, had to wait for a new door panel to be shipped in from Germany.

In the end the cost to replace the small fixed window, plus all the other parts that safelite's repairman damged came out to $4,282.83.

Sorry for the long ranting and raving, feel a bit better, and the window on my X looks like nothing happend to it. I wish I had a scanner so I could post a copy of the invoice.

Thats a damn shame. I'm glad to see that you stood your ground when dealing with your insurance company, just out of curiosity how was the thief able to open the door? The X5 has those pins which are flush to the rest of the door. Also did the alarm go off when the window was smashed?

Reason I ask is that sometimes I have accidentally bumped into my X5 while doing work in my garage only to have the ear piercing alarm go off. Seems to be very sensitive

Weasel will become famous soon enough
In this case I wouldn't call the dealership a "stealer" as they did a good job. (I'm the primary glass guy at my dealer as well) But it sounds like safelite messed you all up! I bet when they got the $4,282 bill the guy got fired instantly, and may have to pay up to safelite himself!

You should see when safelite gets a windshield on an E38 7 series... it takes until the next carwash or rain to come in for a waterleak. Then you find the a-pillar trims and headliner glues to the glass as well... They always seem to do a less than perfect job on BMWs just due to the lack of knowledge and experience on them.
