Transmission Question: Esso vs. BMW OEM
Since changing it, I've noticed sluggish down shifts and I know what most would say, "did you replace the exact amount of fluid to which you drained." And the answer is, "yes." I drained close to 5.6L and replaced the exact amount. Has anyone else out there had any problems with the ESSO fluid? Did I make a mistake on not using the OEM fluid to which I can get from a BMW store out of their 55 gallon drum? |

Esso meets the BMW standard and is recommended by Bentley Manual. Therefore, you're all good. But they say, the change should be done at an earlier mileage not high, and if you do so, you will come across some issues and should just leave it alone.

but then again, it could be just a coincidence and could be something else. I had asked members here before and few were against it and some are pro. This is just one of those topics that just wouldn't end.

5.6L? that's over 5 quarts?
that seems a bit much if you just drained and dropped the pan. the fluid type is fine. |

Esso LT71141 is recommended by ZF - the manufacturer of the transmission for your specific year/model combination. I would recommend rechecking the fluid levels again as you probably had some leakage over 150k and if you put in EXACTLY what you took out that will probably not be sufficient to bring the fluids to their proper level.

Esso is fine, that's what I use. Mine feels the same after flush with Esso. Does the 01 has reset Trans like the newer bimmer (turn key on, engine off and gas pedal to floor for 30 sec thing?). |

hi there! what was the mileage when you changed yours? And how long ago was it? Been wanting to change mine, too scared of what the outcome might be, especially hearing things about it. My x still drives like new and shifts fine though. Please advise.

The only difference is that when I put the lever into P-D-N it feels crisp after flsuh but shifting characteristic is the same. I am no mater mechanic so I'll leave that decission to you. The tricky part is filling up the trans since you have to have engine running (to have the pump going) while the car is jacked up. |

I changed the trans filter/fluid out at 60,000 using Amsoil Synthetic ATF and this past week it turned over to 70,000. There have been no issues at all with the automatic transmission during those 10,000 miles. Combined city and highway driving. This is on a 2002 X5 3.0i.
