Many thanks I will change the filter as car is due service soon anyway. Local dealer was very helpful and told me that the external secondary fuel pump would give problems on 2006 X5s. Could also be a problem with sensor or regulator on the fuel rail or even the injector! Appartently any of the above will bring up the "4B90" trouble code. Once started the car runs perfectly so i'm thinking it could be the external fuel pump.

I will let you know if changing the filter helps.

Thanks again everyone.

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!
Intermittent fault was caused by a sticking fuel pump relay. I found that when the engine refused to fire there was no power getting to the external supplementary fuel pump (located adjacent the fuel filter). I swapped the fuel pump relay and away we went!!!! A fitting end to 2009!

The fuel pump relay is located on the rear of the fuse panel behind the glove box. Glove box has to be removed and the fuse panel lowered. There are 2 light green relays – the fuel pump relay is the furthest most (ie nearest the engine).

Good luck everyone and Happy New Year.
Ian

Glad you got it sorted, well done! And I'm pleased to say that after a day of the new fuel pump on mine the spluttering and bad starting have also disappeared.

Looking at the pump its hard to believe they cost £250 but I'm glad that my journey back from Krakow to London will be less stressful.

Happy new year!

Update:

-17C

Car wouldn't start at all yesterday, ended up having to manually wire the Webasto to come on without the engine running, allowed to run for about 15 mins and then the car started first kick.

Decided to check the supply to the glow plugs, it appears that although the "pre-heater" message only shows on the screen for about 1 second the glow plugs heat for about 12 seconds then go off, I was a bit surprised that after the vehicle was running the glow plugs get power again!

Cheers

Gordon

Hi Gordon.

Have you removed the glow plugs to check that they are working? Also, when you turn the ignition on can you hear "buzzing" from the fuel pumps at the rear of the car?
Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian

We haven't removed the glow plugs yet as we are busy trying to keep all our other vehicles on the road in this cold spell, we will be removing them for checking probably next week.

The rear fuel pump does appear to be fine.

We expect one or more faulty glow plugs to be the final problem, this is the first vehicle we have had for years which doesn't have some sort of indication using the dash lights to indicate glow plug problems and it surprises me that the "pre-heater" message only flashes up on the display rather than staying on the display until the glow plugs switch off.

I'll post what I find.

Cheers

Gordon

Update: 5 of the 6 glow plugs changed, all old one's heated up quickly when tested so no real idea if this is the final problem.

Pain trying to get the inlet manifold off so didn't change plug 6! (If 5 out of 6 are OK then I am sure we won't notice any problems)

Cheers

Gordon
