X5 Morning Disaster - 2002 X5 3.0
This morining while driving to work my car just stopped running. I notice some smoke coming from the back of the car. Had to pull to the side of the road. Called my local AAA to take me to my local mechanic.
Could it be I didn't warm up the car enough. My mechanic is looking at the car. Hopefully I didn't do any damage. Any thoughts on what could have happened. Steve |

Does the oil seperator need to be replaced? And if so, any idea on how much it would cost.
Thanks Steve |

I had the same thing happen to me on my way to work w/a 2001 X5. It was the oil/water separator as mentioned above.
Cost to fix (Parts + Labor) about $1,200. |

I am hoping not to pay $1200 bucks to fix this situation. Still waiting for indy car shop to call me back. Hopefully it is close to what WallX5 paid for parts & whatever labor is going to cost.

Dont forget the valve cover gasket too.
BTW most of time the valve cover will bust after the OS is replace... |

a failed oil separator does not push out the valve cover, it sucks it in. The fault causes excessive crankcase vaccum. When they say they have to remove the spark plugs, and clean all the oil out, the shouldnt charge you any more labor to clean it, if they replace the valve cover gasket also.
