You shouldn't have a problem with the newer models. I haven't heard of any issues with the oil seperator there.

Check the SIB's I posted on the models and years affected. And yes that includes the E70.

How could BMW let this problem continue for that long?????? I cant beleive it carried over to the next gen X5.

Believe it. Same basic engine has been used for over a decade.

Yes but the OS is an external part with external hoses, a modification for a new year would be easy, that's just poor engineering. I still think they make the best cars but this is a dissapointment.

Not poor engineering. They already engineered the fix. More like lazy and pinching pennies to implement the fix across the board.

Reading this thread makes me rather nostalgic for the crankcase ventilation system of 1950's... road draft tubes.

I don't recall anything particularly good about road draft tubes, they were messy and an environmental disaster. The drawing also shows a downdraft carburetor, and pushrods. Those weren't so good either. All in all, modern engines are amazing. The only reason we are even talking about the modern version of PCV valves is that we don't have to talk about ring jobs, lapping in valves, bad floats or needle valves in carburetors, or valve adjustments.
