Could it be.....

Recap - My 2004 4.4 with 75,000 miles went to the dealer for rough idle on cold start up issue. The SES light would activate and the idle would generally correct after shut down/restart. The dealer was unable to reproduce the condition and even had tech's take it home at night to create a cold start condition. The intermediate levers were checked per the newer Service Bulletin and the diagnostics showed them well within spec even though my X build date falls into the captioned months. The SA told me that they put quite a few miles on it and had to fill it up since it was flat bedded to the dealer with less than a quater tank of gas. The SA is throwing around the idea of potentially bad fuel that led to the problem since they have been unable to recreate it since running fresh fuel through it. I am going to pick it up tomorrow.

To those with knowledge more then mine ( which is........everyone) does this sound like a possible scenario? I've had bad fuel in vehicles before with similar symptoms but never the X. Anyone have any experience like this? Thanks all for the time...have a great weekend...John

What kind of fuel were you using initially?

I've always used a good 93 octane....just before this began I fueled up at a rest area on the New York State Thruway just north of NYC. I believe it was Mobil. I always use the recommended octane......I'll know in the morning!!!

Anything is possible. I would use a fuel conditioner for the next few tanks to help clean up whatever bad gas would be left in the tank and then see if will do it again. If it does, you know it's not the gas then. Mine is doing something similar right now but with more frequency. I can also shut it off and restart and it will act better. I'm looking at all the vacuum lines this weekend for vacuum leak. BTW mine only has 62K, I would check yours too if you haven't already.

I have the same rough idle issue on my 06 4.4. Of course the dealer has been unable to duplicate the issue. It also is very jerky under light acceleration. It has also hesitated pretty badly pulling into traffic out of my neighborhood which is not a pleasant feeling.

I always used Mobile thinking it was good fuel. Had same issues and the SA said they are no longer considered premium fuel. Started using shell and its been about 2 months and never had the problem again and its been colder then before.

Update..I picked up the X at the dealer....averything appears to be perfect after driving it about 75 miles and starting and stopping it a dozen times. So I'll buy the bad fuel diagnosis for now.....they did check all the usual possibilities and documented it so I'm happy about that.

On a happy note...I did get the use of a brand new 325i for a week - no charge, the dealer filled the X's tank with premium - no charge, it was very well cleaned in and out - no charge, and it got the NYS Inspection I had origionally requested - no charge!!

If you're ever in need of excellent service and way above average customer service, you will never beat Keeler Motor Car in Latham NY. Can't say enough good about them. Thanks for everyone's constructive input on this deal....have a great weekend...John
