So it connects to the roof rack and then rests on the paint?

While it seems functional enough I can't imagine that it would be very safe to the finish.

It is done by BMW, don't you think they would have thought that?

But for some of those who haul their boats and trailers, and need a back rack this is one of the option...

It seems like a silly design. It is almost as high as a roof rack, so you have to watch your overhead clearance, but you still get to block the rear hatch. Marking up the paint is just a bonus.

I would hope they accounted for it.

The thing is, unless there is some sort of clear film to protect it or adhesive to keep it in place, the vibrations from road travel combined with the weight of the rack will quickly hurt the finish. It may be okay on clean paint, but as soon as dirt/grime gets in and around it you are asking for trouble on anything but a solid mount.

I've used this style of rack before and had lots of paint damage (albeit not on an X5 nor this particular style of rack) but I wanted to at least make people think twice or do some research before potentially damaging their vehicle.

Bizarre. I have never seen a rack like that. But I'll give them a B for creativity.

I'm not feeling it...It looks awkward and out of place. From the looks of it, and mentioned before, it's going to put a lot of pressure on the bumper cover. Sometimes BMW logos don't mean it's the best designed rack. A lot of the time they sub the work and design out.

I don't think any clear film will help. the pressure needs to be distributed more. Adding clear film wouldn't lessen the pressure on the 2 contact points. JM2C

The pressure isn't the issue as much as the abrasion between the "feet" and the paint.

If clear film was in place the feet would rub away at the film, leaving the paint below it protected.

I see what you mean but eventually, you would develop 2 dimples and it may even crack the paint. The top of the bumper is just a cover and not very strong. I think we agree, it doesn't appear it is a good design.
