2006 X5 (resetting to default settings on defrost, etc.)

Just purchased a 2006 X5 and am loving it. I need help figuring out how to reset the default settings on the automatic climate control feature. My defrost is set to a max setting and when I attempt to decrease the air supply, it bumps me off Defrost and goes to another setting (I believe it goes to Auto)

Please help!!!!!

No idea what you are talking about. That's how defrost works.

It is confusing at first but you will get the hang of it soon enough. It does seem different than any other vehicle I've owned. The only thing I still can't figure out is why do I have a dial between the upper two vents to go from hot to cold when I have an A/C control unit that I am telling the very same thing to. Maybe there is a good reason I have to move the dial and adjust control unit to go from heat to cold or vice versa? Kinda primitive for an vehicle with that price tag.

BMW recommends basically keeping the dial in the middle and adjusting the temp digitally by one or two degrees at a time until it's comfortable. That's what I do and I also keep the automatic air-recirculation on at all times as well as the A/C which in the summer does as it's supposed to and during the winter dries the air out to keep fogging to a minimum.

I agree, the dial is weird and something they've had now for around 20 years unchanged. I only crank it up to either max Red or max Blue when I'm freezing to death or in the process of melting from heat, respectively.

Push off the Max Defrost, push on the snowflake button, (which is A/C & defrost)
set air vent(s) to position(s) "on" you choose, adjust temp as you wish. The max defrost
is a euro thing for super duty, high speed fan, quick defogging.

All of the above may be inaccurate, as I am not poz I understand your question...

The dial acts independently of the electronic system and controls the airflow out of the upper vents on the dash.

The reason for this is so that you can have the heat on in the winter, yet have nice cool fresh air in your face to reduce fatigue and just make it comfy. Same deal in the summer, you can have heat coming out on a cool night with the windows down without heating up the rest of the cabin.

I think it is an awesome feature.
