HELP - Power Steering Hose / Leak Question

Hello!

On my 2006 X5 3.0i, I have the power steering hose leak also which was diagnosed by BMW of Fairfax. I currently have it at a local shop to replace the hose; however, I just received a call from the shop to replace the reservoir also since it must be removed to replace the hose. The logic that the shop guy used is that "the reservoir will eventually need replacing, but nothing is wrong with it."

Is it actually necessary to remove the reservoir to replace the hose or is this total BS?

Thanks.

Look at the RealOEM picture at the beginning of this thread. Both hoses was holded by two clamps #5 & #14. The reservior is by itself. There is a filter screen at the bottom of reservior. On the other hand, I would not replace it usless you have a very high mileage car. Good luck.

HELP - Power Steering Hose / Leak Question

Thanks ABWMMA and NYCSterling for the response.

I've looked at the diagram.

Please confirm this: It is not necessary to remove the power steering reservoir to replace the hose.

If he access from the top, the answer is Yes. If he put the car on a lift and access from the bottom, the answer is NO. Btw, removing the reservoir is not a big deal. I would not waste my $$. Save your $$ for something elase.

Thanks for your help. I told them not to touch either--the hose nor the reservoir.

I got one of my power steering hoses fixed earlier this year, the 'suction pipe' which the dealer stated was 'from res to pump.' It is #1 in the diagram

I just went back for an oil change and dealership is saying it is still leaking, only this time its 'from res to cooler.' However, this time the cost is double to replace.

Can someone help me identify which hose I need to replace? Is it different? I would really love to change this myself if it isnt that difficult, and truly is just unplugging a hose and reclamping a new one.

I found it easier to move the clamp down the hose, rather than to try and remove it completely.

For the poster who had the mechanic that wants to replace the reservoir: If you have quite a few miles on the vehicle, it won't hurt to replace the reservoir (especially if they aren't charging you additional labor to do it). Pretty low cost item and that filter will clog up over time as the system isn't sealed (reservoir is vented).

power steering fluid

Hey guys. While changing a cv boot I jacked up my x5 at the center front jacking point and put jack stands under the jack pads in the front. I noticed atf leaking onto the floor. I looked and the drip was forming on the boot on the inner tie rod. But I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Any ideeas?
