Weird Issue with Instrument Cluster DSC/ABS/BRAKE lights

Hello Xoutposters!

Last Thursday my DSC/ABS/BRAKE light came up on my dash then went away on the same drive home. Then on Monday after I got back from vacation it has stayed on. I took it to get diagnosed at my BMW independent mechanic and it came up with no faulty ABS/DSC/ or speed sensor issues at all. I did have him check the cluster and it did come up with an instrument cluster fault.

Unless it goes away with more driving I would assume I need to replace my cluster. There are several on eBay. Do I just buy one from a 4.4 then get it reprogrammed at the dealer? How much does it cost to get reprogrammed?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry can't contribute more on what might be causing the fault or if you can use a used cluster or not. Might want to ask weasel or killcrap.

However, when Justin and I swapped clusters it was fairly easy. I think the dealer could do it in about 15 minutes. Basically, the cluster info. is read, then swap clusters, then the info. is entered into the new cluster. We used a laptop GT1 to do it.

Dealer should only charge you for 1 hour but I have a feeling they're going to ask for more than that. I don't know if they charge a set rate/amount depending on the work like other brand dealers do or not.

If you could acquire a used part from the same model and year there would be no coding required as they are coded the same at production .
this applies to any electronic module on the car .

Wouldn't I still need to have the mileage corrected as they're not the same?

Yes, you would. However, I believe what he's saying is you don't need to actually use a GT1 to tell the X (coding) that the cluster is different - since its from the exact year and model.

Still, you need to use the GT1 to transfer the info. but I guess its not called coding.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the cluster from a 4.6is? I found one for pretty cheap on the eBay.

enoteware,

Looks like Justin has confirmed that a used 4.6 cluster will work for you. When we swapped his out I couldn't remember if it was new or used.

Regarding the 4.6 cluster. Do all the RPM lights work even though it's not really a 4.6?

I am really starting to believe I have a messed up cluster those light still come on every time but it doesn't say my dsc is in active on the read out display.

Thanks again for your help!
