NAV screen is dim now no matter what I do

Hi,

The NAV screen on my '05 4.4 sports has gone dim for the second time now and no matter what I do this time around, it hasn't gone back to the usual brightness it has had. The first time it dimmed (about a month ago) I drove the car hard and it brightened up next time the car was started- it may have been a fluke. Now I've done the same, updated the NAV OS to the latest (v32), ensured the brightness settings are on the highest level, the instrument cluster dimmer knob is on brightest setting - all to avail. The color scheme is on 1 but even on 2 it's still dim.

I was suspecting the battery (still original) but no starting problems or other lighting problems so I figured it can't be the battery. Is there a bulb in there that may need to be replaced? Has anyone experienced such a weird issue?

05 X5 4.4 sports 62K miles.

Try shining your glove box torch directly into the light sensor (small pinhole centre bottom of nav screen). The screen should go to full brightness - if not the photocell or circuit may be at fault.

Thanks for the suggestion. Still not getting full brightness after cleaning and shining a bright flashlight at that pinhole. I played with the BMW adjustment controls, which are the regular brightness control in the setting menu, and also the brightness adjustment within the hidden menu. I ensured both brightness controls are maxed.

The unit has to be faulty. Off to dealer and hopefully it's covered under CPO and extended warranty.

iv been having the same problems with my navi, it sometimes flickers as i start the car but then stays dull, couple people said that it can be due to a low voltage battery even though everything else works on the car! iv got an lpg tank in the way of checking battery so im taking down to my lpg guy to take it out and test battery! also iv heard of people disconnecting the battery for 20 mins and then reconnecting it and it sorted the problem out!

Talking

Had the battery checked out multiple times and no problems with it. In any case, now NAV screen is bright blue like it used to be (as opposed to yellowish dim as before). The temp in Northwest went up and car has been driven more in the last one 3 weeks. It appears to be the battery but son't know what. Never ahppened in the past. battery is original (2005).

Assuming its the battery, is the only fix buying a replacement battery? I've been having this same problem on and off in my X for a while now. There's no way to do a one time charge on the battery, like a battery tender etc?

yes, I used a CTEK battery charger and leave it on the car when it sits for extended periods of time and I noticed it has not turned yellow since. Its the battery for sure.

I am not sure how the car battery would only affect the nav screen but nothing else. There has to be another reason. Mine is dim at times but not that bad. But for sure my auto dim and sensor works erratically. So far it has worked once. Never again.

my issue was not that it was dim, but rather it was YELLOW. I knew I had battery issues b/c my video monitors in the back were hooked up to my cig adapter plug they are hot all the time. Dim LCD screens are basically a function of the CCFL backlighting. They do tend to loose brightness over time.
