for those who removed CV joint at the tripod, what kind of grease did you use to repack when replacing just the outer boot? Should i go ahead and buy GKN tripod grease? i put the outer cv boot grease for the inner joint. I keep reading that this is not acceptable and we really need hi temp CV joint grease. Help me out guys. car is still on jack stands. Thanks!

I don't understand BMW philosophy behind different types of grease for INNER and OUTER.
In the Volvo world and in other BMW (non-X5) models, the CV joints are made by GKN-Lobro and it is the type of grease for both INNER and OUTER CV Joints. I personally think this is overkill, over-engineered non-sense. You are likely fine with the same grease. Anyway, I may be wrong...

INNER CV Joint "guru", question for you guys:
- In my Volvo, the INNER Tripod CV Joint (also made by GKN) is held by 3 tangs (or tabs), you simply bend the tabs and the Tripod CV Joint comes out. - From what I understand, the E53 X5 INNER CV Joint is only held by the rubber boot. Once the rubber boot is slid off, the joint comes out, is this correct?

^cn90, there is a small circlip holding the inner joint on the shaft, IIRC.

I am talking about the relationship between Tripod and "the Box" holding the Tripod, not the circlip that hold the Tripod onto the shaft.

Yes then you are correct, snip the clamp for the inner boot and the joint comes right out of the "box"

I am putting up a side-by-side photo of the INNER CV Joint of BMW X5 vs a Volvo 850, S70 setup.
In the Volvo, you have to bend the 3 tabs to release the tripod. For the BMW X5, I don't see anything holding the tripod in place (other than the rubber boot). ---
