expansion tank removal
After removing the aux fan in prep for replacement, I saw that my expansion tank was cracked and leaking. So, I ordered a new one, and started to remove the damaged one. However, I can't seem to get it loose. I followed the DIY here, but can seem to get it out. I have disconnected the two top hoses, the bottom one at the engine connction, the electrical connection, and one of the bracket screws. (On the driver's light side of the tank.) I can't find the second screw, though there is a screw missing from the passenger side of the tank, at the top of the radiator, that looks like it might have held the second mounting screw at one time. When I attempt to pull up on the tank, it acts as if it is still attached at the bottom, near the oil cooler. What am I missing? Gary |

Nevermind...I did some research on other boards, and found the "floor jack method". Used a long rod (actually 3 - 1/2" socket extensions put together, placed the rod under the tank (had to remove the underside cover, which was just as well, as I dropped a screwdriver in there earlier today) then pumped the jack a few times, and voila! Up popped the tank.
Now I jsut have to wait for the new tank and level sensor, as well as the aux fan, and I will back in business. Gary |

I keep an old radiator cap handy to put on and carefully pry up on it while slightly rocking it back and forth... walks it right out.

Thanks...I have also used the downtime to repair the tailight socket. Don't ask, the space was so tight behind the subwoofer box, and I damaged the socket installing a bulb. I had to take out the sub box to get good access to the light socket, and, while it was out, I removed the speakers, poly fill, and then added some dynamat, and e-dead. My thought is to try and reduce the boom or resonance of that enclosure.
Seems to have worked some. Thanks again! Gary |

[QUOTE=teamgs;754564]Greets,
After removing the aux fan in prep for replacement, I saw that my expansion tank was cracked and leaking. So, I ordered a new one, and started to remove the damaged one. When I attempt to pull up on the tank, it acts as if it is still attached at the bottom, near the oil cooler. What am I missing? Gary, what year is your X5? I've got an 03 4.4 and an 03 4.6is. Ironically I just replaced the expansion tank on both today. The 4.4 has just started to leak and th 4.6 started leaking a few months ago. On the 03, there are two #10 head bolts at the top/front that come out very easy. At the bottom there is about a 1/4 inch pin that slides into a rubber grommet. Removal and replacement were actually very easy but when I was putting the tank sensor (gray elbow) back in the new one I broke one of the ears off. I had to super glue it back before I could reinstall. I would replace the top tube that wraps around the tank because it get very brittle with age. It actually started to leak on the 4.6 before the tank did. You might also consider replacing the cap. Just my .05 worth. Good luck. |

The V8's use a different expansion tank setup from the 3.0i... from the sound of it the OP has the 3.0i.

I apologize for bumping an old thread..
I have 3.0 motor and I am in the middle of the cooling system refresh. I pulled the expansion tank out and to my surprise, there is no thermostat for the Automatic transmission in there? Does these come with one? Thanks,
