Considering that labor/cost for installing a sunroof will be cheap and shipping the the sunroof part (pls see above picture - This came off from a 3.0i, 4.4i or 4.6i American version) will also be affordable, will it be possible to install this on my X5? Are there special crucial things I have to consider in doing this project?

I was thinking more of the difficulty of constructing a rain drainage system (or did the sunroof assembly comes with that?) or bolts and nuts that are non existent on my roof to be able to bolt on the assembly. I have not taken down the ceiling upholstery yet and therefore I do not know what to expect. Would anyone who has had a similar experience of exposing the ceiling have any ideas at all on whether this is possible or not?

Any information will definitely be appreciated.

(Oh by the way, a friend once told me just to upgrade to an X5 with a sunroof but unfortunately I cannot for sentimental reasons and not to mention it's difficult (nearly impossible) to look for an X5 diesel model with all options on it.)
Hey,

I was wondering if you ended up having any success with this project? I just bought a 2005 x5 e53 3L Diesel and the only thing that it's missing is the moonroof. I LOVE the car and don't plan to sell it but would love to do the project.

wpoll will become famous soon enough
It looks like the conclusion was that it cannot be done - short of chopping the entire roof section off and welding on a roof section from a car that WAS fitted with a factory sunroof.

In other words - forget it.

*edit* oddly enough, it seems there a quite a number of roof sections available online for a project like this...

Which doesn't mean to say this a project that many folk would tackle!

Ha,

I am the opposite.
I hate sunroof, it is such a nuisance for repair, water leak.

We have 5 vehicles at home (Volvos and BMWs).
All had sunroof and I never use it!
I like to get rid of the sunroof.

I hardly ever use my moonroof. Recently I opened it after years of non-use and put it in ventilation mode and it got stuck in this mode. I got it to close by running initialization. And then the other day the rear section got stuck in ventilation mode and a repair kit is on order after manually bringing it down. I hear not regularly lubricating it causes these issues, whether it's used or not. And it needs occasional activation for smooth operation. We talk of the cooling system being a major weak point of Bimmers. Add the sunroof to the list.

Amen in to that! I kept mine greased, opened it routinely whether I wanted to or not and mine still stuck... I’d love to say that I would miss my moon roof if I didn’t have it, but... the cost of ownership for a 5th “window” to roll down... can be prohibitive... but I do use it (infrequently, but I do).

Yeah, I'd imagine the sunroof plastic components have their lifespan after all the heating cycles from the sun. I noticed the moonroof slider plastic components have cracks in them. I believe that caused the misalignment and eventual lockup of the moving parts. The repair kit has the required replacement parts.

My back glass has been stationary for so long now... wow. May be time to finally look in to the repair kit.
