Angry White smoke

Hello BMW people
I have a BMW X5 2001 4.4.
for the last month or so when the engine is already warmed up and car has been sitting OFF for 5-10 minutes, i would start up the engine it revs up and then turns off. It will do this 5-6 times in a row and i either have to press gas or shift to R, N or D in order not to turn off.

Yesterday while i was driving in the city i heard a hissing noise which lasted 30 seconds and then an unbelievable amount of white smoke.
The smoke was coming out only from the drivers side exhaust pipes and then it slowly disappeared. It smoked for about a minute.
The smoke was completely done so i decided to drive the car home.
5 minutes later the same thing happen. Hissing noise and then lots of smoke and then it cleared out.
i drove the car home since i was a 1 minute away from home
The car drives fine other than hesitation on hard accelaration

What do you think is it???
is CCV and oil separator the same thing?
my car does not have the ccv just the oil separator

RealOEM.com * Diagram Selection

why only the drivers side exhaust pipes smoke???

BTW i live in AZ its been 110 the last month except the last week low 100 with a lot of humidity.

Please help me
thanks

does it smell. if its pure white then it is usually antifreeze. hope its not a head gasket.

RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.4i Intake manifold system item 2

you still have the cover on rear of manifold where crankcase gas is drawn to intake.
on my E38 740i this has a diaphragm which can leak allowing full intake vacuum to be applied thus sucking oil and causing smoke from one or both exhausts, white smoke or light blue / white -ish smoke . rough running and reluctance to idle at times .

not sure if the X5 has the diaphragm .
I read a thread recently where member had same symptoms as you but I don`t remember if I followed the thread to find out the cure . I do remember bmw tech weasel helping out so if you try a search of posts by weasel you can see how the problem was fixed .

you can have a small sample of coolant tested for hydrocarbons to determine head gasket failure .

if the engine is drawing oil it could be a blockage in the drain from oil separator or the rear cover

smoke gone

I changed the oil separator today
separator was in good condition but the oil retun hose under the separator was cracked.
Smoke problem solved
But i still have the problem of rough idle when i start the car after it is already warmed up

Thank you for the reply

the inside of the manifold will be contaminated with oil as will the throttle body because that is where the crank vent system piping ends . the fuel injectors will also be contaminated .
I used fuel system cleaner for a while which helped immensely .

hi,
i had almost the same issue and worried to give it for the shop to open the engine with an open bell!! i have alredy shared the situation on another thread but didnt get that much of advice..maybe wrong thread:

The problem I have looks like the one described here but still I will need your urgent feedback before the dealer opens my engine with open bank check!!

So, start the engine, normal, no smoke no engine noise just a normal wonderful powerful vehicle..
Waiting around 5-10 minutes, push on the fuel pedal … white smoke goes out from the passenger side exhaust then disappears completely … waiting another 5 minutes and push again … white smoke appear !! drive, stop at traffic light or side, push fuel , white smoke.. but while idle or driving no smoke at all …

Add to that, around every 1-2K mile, oil is consumes by almost a liter and I have to add oil from time to time…, search with the technician around the engine,,, not symptoms for oil leak!

Would it be the Oil Separator as you all say! And if so is it something complicated to do and requires to take out the engine in order to replace it?

Your advice might save thousands so Plz be generic :-)

Anacman beat me to it, good call. I walked away from a perfectly good 740iL years ago because I didn't know what it was...at the time. The more time I spend on here, the more I see the same symptom that were happening to 5/7 cars of the mid/late 90's starting to happen to our early '00 X's. www.e38.org is a great site that has tons of links to many things that can and will start happening to M62 powered X's as well as time goes on.

white smoke

I had the problem of white smoke among with other problems....
white smoke solved
i changed the oil separator about 4 months ago and i found the return oil hose was ruptured
I thought that was it. can run fine for a week and then there it was again
long story short .. the rear intake manifold cover on m62 has a diaphram
you cannot buy the diaphram by it self and from my experience not even bmw parts knew that the rear cover does a lot more than just cover.
when i pulled the the cover out and opened it up the diaphram was ruptured
I bought a new from dealership about $100 and problem solved
so if you have M62 engine change oil separator AND rear intake manifold cover.
You do not have to remove manifold
Be creative, remove a couple of coolant hoses and job should take less than 1 hour
