Wheel balancing

My 2005 E53 is getting close to needing new tyres and I was wondering about tyre balancing. I have never seen and do not want external weights on the rims.

I have searched the forum and there are lots of threads about having them balanced but can't find any saying how .

How are they balanced ? Presumably with stick on weights on the rim at both sides.

Could anyone confirm this as I want to know what I am talking about when I go to get the tyres fitted?

They can put the stick on weights only on the inside of the wheel. This is sufficient for a proper wheel balancing.
DONT let them put those hammered-on weights on the outside face of your rim. This is for commercial trucks.......

TerryJenk,
GOOG "wheel balancing" and it will make your head swim, with all the methods...

Hard to get around "external wheel weights"; if you look, I'm sure your oe wheels have some on each wheel.

Like most stuff, cheaper is not better: find a very good tire joint or, BMW Indy, that has a good quality dynamic
wheel balancing machine, a tech that does wheel balancing regularly, and uses good stick-on, colored plastic weights.

There are several "on the car/120 mph" machines, but unless the tire/wheel combo is screwed, I've never had much luck with that method.

A good dynamic machine will do both static and dynamic, and the weights can often be put on both the inside and outside of inner rim.
The debate of "where/how" is like an oil thread: a hundred "answers", imo.
The "non-weight" method of some internal balancing stuff is not worth piss in a boot, imo.

The oe wheel weights, from BMW, are very elegant; the 2nd time around, the best that can be done are plastic colored weights, done carefully and well. It isn't rocket science, but a good wheel tech can do wonders...

Thanks for the info - by 'external weights' I meant not having the lead clip on weights on the front face of the wheels - these seem to be favoured by lots of tyre fitters in the UK even on alloy wheels ! I have the same wheels as you . I can live with plastic stick ons.

I have downloaded your photo and will print it and take it with me :-)

You want to use a shop that has a Hunter Road Force balancing machine. I am assuming they have them in the UK.

Red face

Hi - apparently there are Hunter Road Force balancing machines in the UK but they are few and far between - I will try to search one out.

Just as a by the way , I have been to Marietta ! Drove from Atlanta to Nashville ,then Memphis and down to stay with a friend of mine who lives in Slidell near New Orleans. Super holiday although Willie Nelson singing 'On the road again ' springs to mind !

I recently had a tire shop install a set of tires for me with conventional balancing. The first two times were unacceptable. Finally they used the Hunter and it was much better. I have no clue why they didn't use the Hunter the first two times. I have also had great experiences with one local high end shop that does on-car balancing. It was actually slightly better than the last shop with the Hunter.

Small world with regards to the Marietta thing. I am sure a lot of people drive through Marietta on I-75 at some point, but probably not many UK Xoutpost members.

Thanks to you both for the info - the existing tyres are ok at present but I am going to put a new set on before winter ( as I am typing this the rain is bouncing off the roof ! ) so have a bit of time to do some research.
