thrust arm bushings

hi all.. just got back from the dealer for a new york state safety/emissions inspection and was told that the thrust arm bushings are going bad and need to be replaced soon. i asked how come so soon the car has only 25k miles he said could be pot holes or roadway conditions etc...i feel it is a bit premature i mean i dont do 4 wheeling with this thing..anyway price $525...i will take it to an indy..i am sure it can be done for less...or maybe a diy..what do you think..2005 x5 4.4..do these parts wear out that fast..thanks rob..for any member that lives on long island any good indys you can recommend..also the problems the advisor said i should be experiencing..steering wheel shake..or when going over bumps loose steering i dont feel..rob

From what I understand this is a common failure. If you get them replaced I would at least consider using the Meyle HD bushings.

The bushings themselves can be pressed out and replaced but it just depends on the shop or mechanic as they will probably just replace the entire arm with the bushing already installed.

Best of luck.

Pressing bushings out is time consuming, you may want to burn them out with a torch. I've torched bushings before and it's quick and easy.

Yes, use these bushings. A few of us have them installed already. Weasel, who is a BMW factory tech also has them. My last set of OEM fluid filled bushings only lasted about 30,000 miles or so before one started leaking. So far so good on the HD ones.

Hi FSETH

so if there is sort of leaking, can you see the fluid leaking out of the bushings?

In my case, the fluid leaked onto my garage floor. I don't think they necessarily have to be leaking to warrant replacing. Not positive about that though.

The HD bushings are not fluid filled.
