Wheel Spacers Help?
I have added the wide rear fender flares from 4.6is and front fender flares from 4.8is to my 3.0i. Not looking to perpetrate a fraud, just dressing up the ol' girl. I have also added style 212 19" rims so she's styling right now. I will soon be powder coating those 212's to ferric gray/gunmetal color. So with these new additions specially with the flares I should say, her new shoes are looking very indented inn, specially in the rear. I would like to add some wheel spacers to make her shoes stick out a bit more. Problem is I dont know what MM size to buy. If anyone has any idea on what MM size please share. I have seen some pictures in the DIY of someones 4.6is with 30MM spacers and would like your imput. Please share any information. All your help is greatly appreciated. |

First, find the specs for Style 212 which happen to be: 19x9, ET48 (offset)
Second, find specs for 4.6/4.8 wheels which happen to be: 20x9.5, ET45 FR and 20x10.5, ET30 RR Use a wheel offset calculator like this: Wheel Offset Calculator Example on how to use the wheel offset calculator: Enter the width (20) & offset (30) for the 4.6/4.8 rear wheels for 'current wheel spec'. Enter the width (9) & offset (48) for the Style 212 for 'new wheel spec'. You get a value of 1mm for inner position: This means, compared to the stock 4.6/4.8 rear wheels, the Style 212 wheels you're using now have 1mm MORE clearance (measured from the inside of the wheel towards the car). So, pretty much the edge of the inner wheel is at the same position as the stock wheels. You get a value of 37mm for the outer position: This means, compared to the stock 4.6/4.8 rear wheels, the Style 212 wheels you're using now have RETRACTED 37mm (1.45") for the outer wheel edge position. So, your outside wheel edge is, to use your own words "indented in" by 1.45". If you want to use spacers and push your wheels out to be closer to stock spec, then I think the max is 30mm. 30mm = 1.18" so even using that your outer edge will not be at stock spec. Also keep in mind that if you use a 30mm spacer you'll also be adding the same amount of distance for clearance on the inner edge. Might not look quite right. You could also compromise and get a smaller width spacer. Personally, I'd forget the spacers and consider just getting replica Style 87s or 168s because: - Relatively cheap at around $600. - Style 212s are for E70s so you must be using hub rings. If not, go get them ASAP! - Now you might like 4.6/4.8 wheels w/o spacers - Better handling w/o spacers Also for the fronts I would not mess with them as they're close enough. |

TwinsPoppa Thanks a million for your knowledge and input on this madness I am facing.
I will put these style 212's for sale and get on the hunt for a pair of style 168's. I like those better than the 87's because they seem to cover more of the caliper and disk brake area and if you're not adding slotted disk brakes or big boy calipers 168's are the way to go. Now, is there a brand of replicas you would recommend or are they all pretty much the same? |

30mm in the back Check out my thread below, I posted before and after pics when I did them last year. I take a pic of the back tomorrow morning
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...r-spacers.html Don't ruin ur truck with 168's... Go for the 87's I wish I had them If your worred about seeing the brakes, go to the link below and you'll see how I fixed that problem!! BMW X5 E53 [00-06] Cross Drill Slot Front & Rear Brake Rotors I love em', they stop 10x better, they're quiet, they're inexpensive, and they look just straight up nasty! Why hide something when you can make it something to show?...! |

Shooter,
Thanks a lot for your input and help. You X looks great with the spacers in the rear. After doing a lot of research I have decided to buy 30mm spacers. Style 87s are a hot commodity in NYC and hard to find, specially since I want them OEM, don't want after-market. Also if you haven't added 4.6is rear wide fender flares, I purchased mine from BMW of Morristown in Jersey and they were not that expensive. I have all the info of the parts manager that helped me out, and I also have the part numbers. I believe the whole set of both rear fender flares and lower spoilers came out to $350 bucks. Thanks again and enjoy your X. |

I run replica 87's 20x9.5 all around during winter season (30mm rear spacers). Ordered from Finish Line Wheels...i've had zero issues with them and the minor weight difference isn't noticeable.
Happy hunting |
