I am in the same boat. Mine has been leaking ALOT, but I have not had time to replace it. I am going to hopefully get it done this weekend. Thanks for the heads up.

Just got done changing the stupid 8 dollar gasket. Man, it was a pain in the ass to get the alternator back in as mentioned in the various other threads. I found that if you line it up then push down you can use a philips head screw driver to poke into the bottom bolt hole and use it to help align the bottom holes. While i was at it i noticed that the clamp that holds the PS hose at the bottom of the PS resevoir was also loose and so was the clamp at the end of the PS to the PS pump. I also closed off the open engine area and degreased the whole side there making extra sure no water or chemicals gets into the oil area. but now its shiny clean and only the bottom is left to clean but ill do that in the morning. Need to remove the aluminum skin plate. Overall, it was an easy job to do. I bought oil, gasket and filter form the dealer for (10 quarts ) for a total of just shy of 100 bucks. It took me with 2(15-30min breaks phone calls) and 45min to clean the housing and engine area and total of 6hrs. which is what i read many forms would take about 4 hrs to complete.

also, many say that you should take out the vanos hose from the back of the oil housing but i disagree its easier to take the hose of from the other end which sits right next to the oil filter so its less hassle.

I replaced mine today. It's not that difficult of a job. It took me about 2.5 hours and it was easier than expected. I did not remove the power steering pump as the E46 fanatics mentioned. Once I got the housing loose there was plenty of play to remove the gasket there in place and put the new one in. I did remove the vanos bolt from the back side because it wasn't that difficult. Overall I am happy this is done. On to the next project!!

What engine do you have? If it's 3.0, then this DIY will work. If not, you may want to look for a DIY more applicable to the larger engine. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this DIY. I'm going to do this along with the Valve Cover Gasket as a Prevent measure starting today 11-26-11. I also have a large loss of oil 1 qt per thousand and it is leaving drops in my driveway... MY WIFE HATES THAT she wants me to get rid of the X cuz of the oil. I told her I'd get rid of her first
