2005 X5 e53 3.0l Hydramatic Transmission parts inquiry
My 2005 X5 e53 3.0l is of the same transmission with member championscooter.
Has anyone please reply if they did a total transmission oil and basic parts service, like replacing the 4 hard plastic sleeves, the hard plastic goggle and the bigger hard plastic at the upper inlet wire port. My transmission engine is a GM France manufactured Hydramatic type. |

Any particular reason you are doing the plastic sleeves also?
I've done mine twice already and only did the filter and pan gasket.

Hi RRPhil, my petrol 2005 X5 e53 3.0l w/ GM France built Hydramatic transmission is in Trans Fail mode. Letter "S" and Check Engine and Transmission icon are all illuminated in the instrument panel. Scanner Foxwell NT510 indicates TRANSMISSION SWICTH fault. Inquiry pls, how can I check if transmission switch can be repaired/adjusted or need to replaced. The XYZ Switch / Transmission Switch is probably inside the valve body in this hydramatic engine type.

Have not done that on my 3.0i but had to do it on the 4.6. Exact same symptoms.
For the 4.6is ZF, the switch was on the side of the transmission. It was plug and play, no coding needed. Are you in Metro Manila? Lots of shops can do that easy, or are you planning to DIY?

hi Friend g300, right now I stay in my QC, Metro Mla residence. I am planning a DIY to while away time, me being a retired banker. I will change fluid, filter, gasket and trying to figure out how to check the TRANSMISSION SWITCH IF REPAIRABLE, NEEDED ADJUSTMENT or a REPLACEMENT. With this GM5 HYDRAMATIC A5S-390R (GM 5L40E), I'm sure the transmission switch also accordingly known as inhibitor/XYZ switch is inside. If I will be bolder then likewise pull down the valve body for a total clean. Still researching for the required torque on the valve screws and
if there are really 5 feeding tubes connected by metal strap after I pull down down the valve body inside the pan. |

That's a nice retirement hobby! Our trucks are very heavy though, I recommend getting a big jack amd heavy duty jackstands.
I hope RRPhil helps you out, he knows a lot about these transmissions. Here is RRPhil's teardown of an A5S390R that can hopefully clarify a few things. You're right, the switch is in the sump. https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...-teardown.html He also has an informative post on checking a transmission switch, it had pictures, pinouts, and diagrams also. But I think it was for a ZF. Will see if I can find it. However, IIRC, it is non-adjustable/repairable.

thanks g300. Actually I got RRPhil's post on this and I really want to know where the inhibitor switch/XYZ switch sensor connecting wires are located so that I could test and localize (using Digital Volt OHM Meter) if the defect comes from the Inhibitor Switch itself or the power or voltage that flows to it.
Any picture/video where exactly to find the connectors will be of great help. Thanks again Friend g300 |
