The point is that these are high-performance SAVs that (at least when new) were $70k USD machines and you're willing to put on an unheard of Taiwanese tire (or tyre) to save a few $$. I guess someone has to be a guinea pig, but:

and thats so true, and i have tried them and for me they are every bit as good as the michelins i did have or maybe better.

so how about a high performance tyre and you don't need a mortgage for hmmmm

sounds good to me

You don't have a clue where I am from and since when does that have anything to do with tires.....so let's leave that aside not have a pissing match over race and provenance. I happen to agree with JCL that's all. You are entitled to your opinion, one of the basic human rights.

From my research it seems Atturo tires are manufactured by Federal Tires, they are simply rebranded by Atturo.

Federal Tires seems to have a good tire manufacturing reputation.

Federal Tire Corporation has had technical cooperation with both Bridgestone and currently Dunlop. So I doubt their manufacturing techniques or product quality is questionable, or at least not as questionable as some of you are making them out to be.

So while the brand name is very new and undeveloped, the tires themselves are backed by a very experienced company.

These tires probably fall in the Nexen to Kumho category.

I'd agree that they probably aren't too different than Nexen or Kumho, or for that matter, Hankook or Falken. I wouldn't purchase any of those, they are all second or third line tires, but that is just me.

In terms of Atturo standing behind them, I am not so sure. In North America, Atturo is selling tires only by the container load, to discount tire outlets. It doesn't sound like they have much of a presence in North America. Perhaps the discount outlets will stand behind them.

Bigwave, my high performance tires were manufactured in Germany. I am not fixated on only buying tires made in Germany, but I do think that higher end tires are not generally made in contract manufacturing outlets in Taiwan. Yes, cheaper tires may meet the needs of some drivers. I am glad you are happy with your tires.

thanks and yes my tyres more than live up to my expectations, i guess for me my X5 is my means of getting to and from work, and not a high performance car.

however that said the new tyres took less weight to balance them than the Michelin Damaris (spelling) so i,m assuming thats good.

i fail to see the value in paying twice the price for a name brand when there are alternatives, and especially if the cheaper alternative does a comparable job,

finally with all these things i'm amazed that people will immediately bag a product without at least trying it for themselves. really they are spreading disinformation.

i think when someone asks for an opinion we all would respect first hand knowledge not generalised assumptions.

shouldn't we strive to be factual in our answers??????

Im looking into buying new rears and will try to fit these tyres. i'm also attracted to the price. got nexens at fronts and found no difference from diamaris. I am also reluctant to pay premium price for michelins if the cheaper brands does the same job 95% of the time. maybe we are looking for alternatives cause we live in AUS where everything is so expensive compared to US.

mate i dont think you can go wrong, but as i said earlier i do find them a little noisy but only noticeable when the window is down

we have this stupid M1 between Brisbane and the Gold Coast,( concrete surface) and all tyres make a racket on it, on general tar roads i dont notice any noise

If a purchaser is simply looking for tires that keep the wheels from rubbing on the ground, then many brands of tires will do. We tend to focus on the performance aspects here because it is in our nature, we are generally car enthusiasts. That isn't right or wrong, it just is what it is. Yeah, we're biased.

Weight required to balance isn't the only indicator of quality, but yes, it is one measure. I would have turned a tire on the rim to find the mounting position that requires the least additional weight, but perhaps the Michelin installer already did that. Also, you can balance a square tire perfectly, but that doesn't make it round. My point is that there are many aspects of tire quality. Also, I don't think that model of Michelin is of particularly high quality, given the reports.

I never said the tires were crap, as I haven't used them. I did say that I will generally not purchase economy tires, as I have found previously that I do notice the differences. That isn't disinformation. Given that tires are the entire means of achieving both traction for acceleration and braking, as well as cornering, characteristics which I value, I lean towards premium tires. On the other hand, I use generic products when I don't recognize a performance difference.

One additional difference to think about is that Atturo set up a distribution network in Australia, according to their web site. Part of my warning about purchasing these tires in North America is that there is no similar distribution network. As mentioned above, Atturo are actively looking for discount tire stores here, to whom they will drop ship tires by the container load. That is not indicative of a commitment to the North American market, and essentially means that any warranty issues are at risk of not being dealt with. It becomes a buyer-beware situation. It also means that North American requirements with respect to tire labelling, tread wear ratings, traction codes, and so on, are in doubt with respect to accuracy. Not necessarily wrong, but certainly in doubt. Tires are not independently tested in North America, the marketplace relies on the tire manufacturer to determine tread ratings and so on.
