Does all 4 tires need to match? otherwise you damage the transmission!

Is this statement correct? I was told by the americas tires rep that all 4 tires need to match other wise you damage the transmission.
any comments?

They all need to be within a few percentage of each other in rolling diameter. The easiest way to achieve that is with matching tires. If you have four very worn tires and only replace two, on one axle, you can get problems. If there are two almost new tires and you replace the other two with new, same size and tread pattern, you can be fine.

And you don't damage the transmission, you damage the transfer case, which is bolted to the transmission.

It depends what the difference in rolling diameter/circumference is.

Fine, but price has nothing to do with rolling diameter.

You should be fine with the spare if you have OEM tires/wheels sizes (whether 17", 18", staggered 19", or staggered 20", all have approx. same rolling diameters).

I had the Pirelli Scorpion Zero Assym previously and now on the Michelin Latitude.

The Pirelli are heavier than the Michelin, but does have a wider contact patch than the Michelin (even though they have the same width specs). You will be able to tell if you have both tires side by side. This is probably why the Pirelli grips better than the Michelin. The Pirelli also have better wear than the Michelin (I got about 25k miles out of the Pirelli, not sure I'll get 20k out the Michelin on the rears...both wore evenly). The Michelin, however, do ride more smoother and more comforable than the Pirelli. Given all these, I will most likely go back to the Pirelli for my next set. I was expecting better wear from the Michelin

No, it should be, "Do all 4 tires need to match..."

Does anyone know what are BMW's specs/adherence for matching tires? within 30% (Porsche) or 4/32nd's (Audi)?
