Door Latch/Carrier Problems

Hi all,

I have trawled the forum and found many articles on the above, but not one that may be able to help me in my particular case.

Basically the outside door handle (drivers door) does not open the door. The inside handle does-no problem, and the door-lock pin moves up and down normally. After reading numerous threads relating to this problem fingers generally point towards the door carrier.

I took the door card and associated parts off today to find that when pulling the door handle the bowden cable pulls upwards (and returns) normally and operated the arm on the door latch normally. Does this mean there is a problem with the latch and not the carrier?

The reason I ask this is because my understanding is that the carrier is the link between the handle, the cable and the latch, and if it was broken then the cable wouldn't operate... Am I right, wrong?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Next step would be to take off the latch and see if it has anything broken. is it pulling the cable enough to release the latch? I had my cable go and had to replace the whole carrier.

What is 'enough'? It moves at least 1/2". Its not releasing the latch, at least I dont think it is seeing as the door isn't opening still. The cable is moving perfectly when the handle is pulled, no notchiness, no snagging, no slack etc.

Is there a DIY for removing the latch? Would it help access etc if the window was up, or down?

X5H, I was going to remove the carrier in the first place looking at all the threads on the subject, the majority of which point firmly towards the carrier. But like I said the cable is working fine, so how can it be the carrier? Not being a PITA, its just I thought the carrier was the outside door handle-cable-to-latch link. Which makes me think its not the carrier.

My logic (right or wrong) is that if the cable is working fine then how can it be the carrier? Is there another mechanism in the carrier that could be defective and thus preventing the door handle opening the lock?

Mine did the same thing as you have described. It is the carrier. The carrier is made of white metal and the small fingers had broke off on one side of the carrier. I purchased a new carrier and all is good. There is a very good write up on this forum on how to remove the carrier and replace. It is a pain in the butt to do but I am confident the fingers on the carrier are broken and that is your issue. About $130 at the dealer

My carrier did the exact same thing. Both driver and passenger side door. Pretty easy fix 45 minutes per side for me. Once I had removed both carriers I discovered a small hairline fracture on the drivers side and a much larger brake on the passenger. If the carrier isn't broke now it will be.

Ok guys, thanks for your replies, I will order the carrier and try and get this done over this coming weekend pending delivery of the carrier of course!

Thanks for the heads-up on the write-up joeboch. That is what I was following in order for me to have got this far, then found the bowden cable moving which led me to think it couldn't be the carrier.

Anyhoo, as you guys seem certain its the carrier I'll get right on it ASAP. Thanks again.
