You're not wrong about it being used for other than it's intended purpose BC... but in the grand scheme of things. Who cares. This forum is barely looked at by moderators (if ever) and we are lucky it's still here at all really. Enjoy it while it is.

Glad it's still here. Trying to maintain my old X5 would be impossible without this group. Who gives an ess if it's not about "what did you do for your X5 today"? It all involves a bunch of us trying to help a bunch of others trying to maintain 18 year old or less vehicles. Nothing less than 13 years old. If I didn't have this forum I would have dumped my X.

Maybe we could change the title to Squeeze Boy's What have you done/for your E53 thread since he thinks he makes the rules

I can see the need for some quick, popular, just yell out a question and see what you get catch-all thread, vs. starting a new thread for a small or uncertain problem. I know search might solve most of that.

At the end of it all, you'll end up with one giant unmanageable thread, like this one, but will not have hundreds of other flameouts. Might be better.
Yes the thread I just linked was specifically for the concept of the catch all what's wrong with so people dont need to make a new thread for every thing. Basically was / is the catch all for helping fix things. @bc is not wrong that it would be good to put repair Qs in a repair Q thread and non repair In a non repair thread.

There are a bunch of posts on the what was/is broken on your E53 thread where questions should be.

I'm as guilty as the askers because it's just easier to reply wherever asked. But I agree it would be better to split the help questions off so I will be answering NOT here : if you'd like to see answers to a repair Q from me, please ask in the what's broken thread vs the what fun new thing thread.

I can't project the future but it seems to me that any thread that is open to any question and then there is input toward a solution is counter to the intent of the forum.

The evolution of a catch all thread will parallel what is happening to this thread. There are less problem specific threads and more and more is posted here. If I do a search and it pulls up this thread as the location or a catch all thread I am going to have to read posts that are about other topics to find those that address my issue. As an OP I would never open such a thread to get clear, quick targeted input. An example of what happens on this and would happen on a catch all thread.--- What can cause a rough idle? Next post- Changed the oil and filter after 7500 miles. Next post-what oil did you use? Next post- not going to get into that one. Next post-why is there air. Next post-have you checked for a vacuum leak. etc etc.

I suspect almost everyone subscribes to this thread and would also have to subscribe to a catch all thread to stay in the loop. I looked forward to posts to this thread. I learned about things I might consider doing and the results and it was interesting just to hear what others are doing to their X5s. When there is a post I get an email and now I cringe when I do.

FYI- over the years I have been a member I have never heard of any concern for the number of new threads opened. Certainly there has never been a suggestion from Admin to post quick questions here. I think if a catch all type of thread is in order it should be endorsed or opened by Admin. just an opinion.

While I understand the desire to not see new threads for every little thing, the alternative to me is for users to search for an older thread on their topic and revive it if they have a new angle or need clarification. I've never understood the common internet forum animosity toward reviving older threads. IMHO, it enhances the searchability and improves the archiving of solutions.

Just my $0.02.

AM.

Dammit guys....back on topic!

Replaced Guibo, trans fluid, and transfer case fluid. Anyone run powerflex bushings for their thrust arms? Considering them but worried they would be too stiff. E39 guys swear by them.

same thought here when I did mine so I went with Meyle HD bushings about 5yrs ago and still in great shape and I drive in the detroit area and our roads are worse than most 3rd world countries that I have been to

I have no problem with new threads. At least I have the option to get involved or not. I agree, more members should use the search function first to see if they can determine what to do on their own but that is contrary to the must be immediate world we live in and the less ones knowledge the less useful searches will be. It's fine to revive an old thread though probably not a good idea if the last post was over a year old. Hardly ever a question that hasn't been answered several times over the years.

I am into improving handling. I have done lots of suspension upgrades and have Powerflex subframe bushings but no where else. Handling capability is way past anything needed for the street. Powerflex has a reputation of lasting much longer than stock bushings but I don't think they are worth the additional investment especially when weighed against other suspension mod options. E39 experience is not necessarily transferable to an X5. Oops, responding to your question is also off topic.
