The nut was basically a cylinder, the groove (arrow) was added by pounding on the spline socket.

Good to know thanks. Looks like those sockets have a ton of spline to help grab. My only true issue which I'm already bummed about is the lack of room. The AC lines are killing me with swing space.

That's why I figured you will have to pry the socket on with a big lever (crowbar) and use a piece of wood so you won't crush something on the other side.

The bostich spline sockets are amazing. Recently when changing an electric water pump on a 328xi, I couldn't get the correct eTorx bit on and was able to use just the right size of spline socket

What did you do to / for your E53 today??

Angle grinder won't fit else that'd be my first suggestion. Dremel with extension cable would probably work. It's hard to cut a nut off without cutting the bolt bolt also.

On that same job, I did cut through the one bolt that was hopelessly melded to the bracket for the shock mount. Less fun was the fact it was a washer head bolt so I had to cut through 20mm off hardened steel vs 8-10.

The shock itself was counter sunk no way to get in there with cutting tool.

I was going to suggest the same. It does look like there is room. I've used those in the past on 3/8 to 1/2" size bolts that had 25 yr rusted on.

if your worried about damaging the stud....
cut the nut most of the way off then use one of the socket type extractors, hammer it on and it will take the nut right off at that point

A lot of hitting on that stud it finally grabbed a little bit to turn it and I finally got it all after 6 hours worth of labor on it.

Nice. It took me two days to remove the exhaust manifolds from two M62s. And that's with no nuts stripping!

Perseverance pays off.
