Unbelieveable: $$ to fix my 4.8is

Two months ago, I rear ended a relatively new Honda Accord. I trashed this lady's car. To my 06 X5 4.8is, I needed a new bumper and a new C member. Total cost for mine was ~$2,000. BTW, if anyone needs body parts for their X5's, try these guys: -- Auto body parts from all the major manufacturers - 1000's of auto parts. If you need to identify parts, use the site below: BMW Parts - Call (800) 734-0782 for New Genuine BMW Parts and Accessories - Save Money

After I picked her up on Saturday, my wife was to drive it home. The damned alternator AND the battery died to the point where the X5 just shut down in the center lane of Interstate 45. She manged to roll off an exit and move to the right-hand curb lane. Even the flashers stopped working after two hours and left her stranded TWO MILES from the Advantage Clear Lake BMW dealership! And since they were closing in 30 minutes, they could not help my wife and left her stranded in 29 degree weather!

So, since she's a CPO, the alternator and a leaky water pump found through inspection requested by me are both covered minus a $50 deductible.

But now it gets interesting. I along with many others of you have been bitching about a vibration under braking at high speeds (~45mph to 80+mph). They found one of my control arm bushings LEAKING. And, bushings are not covered under CPO warranty. PLUS BMW want $360 for a new battery. I told them to charge my battery while the alternator was being R&R'd. I can pick up the top of the line at an AutoZone by my home for $160 and R&R it myself.

I sincerely hope that with recently replacing tires all around for $1100 and changing my front rotors for $99 each for zinc-plated cross-drilled versions that the vibration will be completely gone. Right now, the vibration is almost gone. If not, the 2006 Black Sapphire Metallic with the beige-cream comfort leather seating and all options except for the sliding tail tray will be sold! And this is coming from a guy whose last three vehicles were a 2001, a 2003.5 and a 2005 M3 cabriolet as well as driving BMW's exclusively since 1988!

BMW are you listening? This SHIT is getting really old!

Can't really count an accident against the X5 as it was not any fault of your BMW. As for the other stuff, seems like normal repairs on vehicle going on 5 years old. Mine is averaging $400 a month in repairs but still cheaper than a new one!

Well you should just start writing up your for sale ad if you are stressing over maintenance repairs except for the alternator that you don't even have to pay for.

You crash into someone and have to fix your X and BMW should be listening to what?

Your battery died because your alternator apparently wasn't charging. Seeing as how it happened on the drive home from the body shop, wouldn't you surmise the damage was related to the accident? Was the radiator, fan etc damaged in the collision? Perhaps one or more of these parts struck the alternator or drive belt somewhere causing damage that wasn't properly asessed before the repairs were made.

I agree the BMW batteries are a notorious ripoff. I would personally go Interstate. Youll still save money and have a better warranty.

Your vehicle has 60k on it. Those bushings are probably worn out. This is normal. They are a liquid filled rubber that take an immense amount of force under even normal driving conditions. It's parts of the way your suspension is designed. This helps your 5k lbs sav handle more like a mid-sized sedan.

Best of luck with the repairs.

This is chitty (chitty bang bang). If I just spent 4 figures at the dealer and had issues on the way out I'd at least expect some help somehow, not just because they were closing soon. WTF.....

Maintenance is getting old? Brakes, tires, battery, alt....... I've done that on all my cars. Perhaps it is all just bad timing for you?

Aside from the fact that your truck just sustained collision damage, what's plan b after cpo?

You're obviously not new to the brand, and i assume you peruse threads/posts on experiences, failure prone components (i.e what to expect) etc...Word of suggest from a fellow E53 iS owner: if you believe maintenance is getting old on your $70k 5 year old, prepare her for a new home (GLWS).

Bruce, as some stated above....what's the chances that some of this is related to your accident? You did have a front end crash and if I were you, I'd call the insurance adjuster and have them come look at the X again. It's not too late to turn in a supplemental claim partner. As for the brand and the 4.6is / 4.8is models in particular, you have gotta know by now that these aren't cheap fixes. While you are disappointed today, when it's running as advertised I'm sure you grin from ear to ear with enjoyment. I remember the history of your 4.6is and what I'll tell you is this, I owned 2 E53's......a 4.4i and a 4.6is. While both were under some type of warranty, it's still important to have a good relationship with your service team. I'm not sure who you are using, but drop me a PM and I'll turn you own to my crew. If you prefer an indy, I'm sure I know the best one in the greater Houston area. Good luck with your lastest X5 battle.............Phil

Bruce I hear ya.
Well sometime in life, someone needs to fall flat on their face before realizing how good things were; that happens to all companies. I always vote with my wallet, kinda guy (but a logical and practical one).

Guess what, non-BMW cars need new batteries, brakes and bushings too! Sometimes alternators, TIMING BELTS, water pumps, and transmissions too! Who would have thought that??? They get in accidents too.
