Question Mirror Cover Removal

Hey guys,

Fairly new here to Xoutpost. Just got my 04 X5 3.0i last weekend and i'm trying to fix a few small things on it. Looking around all over this forum you guys seem to know quite a bit about these cars so hopefully you can help me some here.

The passenger side mirror will pop back out after a few seconds when using the self-folding feature to bring both of them in. I've read some of the posts on here about fixing the little metal clip inside the mirror but i'm having extreme difficulty getting the freaking body colored cover off to be able to get to it.

If anyone can get me a few simple pics/vid of how to easily remove the housing it'd be super appreciated!! I'm afraid of snapping off any of the plastic clips inside the mirror... Thanks in advance guys!!

P.S. Totally loving this freaking car by the way!!!!

Hate to say it but that video is misleading. Along with the other posters of thsat thread I'm inclined to agree that he had most of his ears/tabs broken already. Mine was by no way that simple!

Get a medium sized flat-bladed screwdriver in between the front cover portion (ring) and the back cover and work your way around 'popping' the tabs. As you do this make sure you pull on the back cover to release these tabs.

You don't need to 'lever' up or down much as you don't want to wreck the plastic and more importantly your paint. However, when manipulating the cover off with your hand don't be scared of breaking it. Its tougher than you think, just be mindful of saving the tabs thats all. Good luck

Dang, great! That was perfect info. Exactly what I was looking for. I'll get out there and try it right now! =)

UPDATE: Thanks guys for all the help in this. I got the cover off just fine (prolly broke a few of the bottom tabs), but oh well. Also fixed the self folding mirrors problem on the passenger and now it works perfectly!!! Thanks again!

I'll need to do the same thing to mine... my driver side mirror wiggles while driving and need to fix the limit switch for both mirrors.

Happy to have this site as a resource

Can't believe how cool it is to have fixed my retracting mirrors myself. Thanks to everyone on this site and several threads for identifying the issue and documenting the fix. Cost me 30 minutes of research on the web, and 10 minutes in my garage. Most of the time was trying to get the cover off (yes I broke two of the three bottom tabs), and then a minute with a pair of pliers to bend the metal clip on the switch and re-attach it. Can't remember which thread, but someone said to move the mirrors manually and you could hear the switch activate - that saved me some time as I only had one not working. What I really appreciate though?? Not having to take a trip to the dealer and then have them tell me that would be $1000 for a new one...priceless.

Thanks again.
