Self-Leveling Air Suspension - Description
"The X5's fully independant suspension delivers the comfortable ride and excellent handing for which BMW's are famous. It uses the same advanced patented suspension concepts and components found on BMW sports sedans and coups. Passengers also enjoy a comfortable ride thanks in part to twin-tube gas pressure shock absorbers. Located as far apart as possible to mazimize cargo space, these shocks incorporate two sets of internal valves to smooth over bumps, yet still maintian remarkable firm handling. The system adjusts to uneven and shifting load weights and even takes dynamic driving maneuvers into account. The 4.6is and the 4.4i feature air springs on the rear axle, replacing conventional steel springs. These are pressurized by an electronic motor powered compressor. Combined with the vehicle's electronically controlled self-leveling, this offers two benefits: First, the vehicle height remains nearly constant, regardless of load. Second, the load-bearing air springs help provide optimium ride comfort at all times." |

Just last night my buddy was riding with me on the freeway and he mention how smooth my ride is!
I have the full (front/rear) air suspension which is rare on the '02 models. Combined with the Intrax Module, the system kicks ass. Intrax for X5's with FULL air suspensions: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...2002-4-4i.html Last edited by zerochief; 02-03-2009 at 01:30 AM. |

it was an option, the rear self leveling is standard on the 4.4 and 4.6. The 4.6, however, cannot be had with front air suspension (for some odd reason)

Is it the same el. divice/arm on the rear axsel that control the automatic headlight adjustment? My lights were a little high and i notice that the arm was broken, i adjustet it manualy and now it feels a bit hard to drive. When i put the arm up to get the lights down maybe the x thinks its loaded down at rear and pumps up the susp. Does this make sens? I also have the same devise/arm on my right front susp. 2001 3.0i.
