Navigation replacement

I have had my 2002 X5 (with DSP) for a few weeks now and really don't like the how the navigation screen works for both nav and audio use. I find it cumbersome and not intuative.

I am considering replacing it with the Pioneer AVIC-D1(or another aftermarket system) or a carputer. Does anyone have pictures of their replacements for their navigation? Do I lose any functions when I replace my nav unit? Does anyone have an opinion on this overall?
