Adding AMP to 2004 X5 3.0d
I picked up my 2004 X5 3.0d a couple weeks ago, I now am looking at adding my aftermarket AMP and sub. There is plenty of info on the net for tapping into the factory amp, however in Australia and I think Europe There was an audio option labeled "stero" I believe and is non-nav, non-dsp and the amp is integrated in the head unit. I've had a look around and can't find an alternative, does anyone know of any audio cables in the boot area that I could use in this scenario. I had a look around under the spare where some had reported a radio module being installed for some models however I didn't have that but thought maybe some cables would be there. The only thing I could find was down near my my PDC module and trailer brake was an unused connector, however I have no idea what it does and if it's audio related. I will attach pictures so if anyone could have a look and has any info it would be appreciated! Thanks, Ash |

I just added a basslink to the other day, so I was doing the research on the board. While I wasn't specifically paying attention with regards to non-US Cars, iirc, there was a post that said the amp in the UK cars was under the spare tire.
I can't confirm this in anyway, but it's worth a look.

figured out in the process that there's a US config, UK config (i'm in UK), and also figured out that there's also a 3rd config which is sold in some other europian countries, possibly thats the config you have. the us config has an amp below the cd changer (non-dsp versions) the uk config has a bm54 amp right behind the spare wheel (non-dsp versions) the 3rd config has no seperate amp module, and the speakers are directly wired from teh head unit which has a built in amp (i suspect this is a lesser wattage amp). i suspect yours is the 3rd config. in which case i'm not sure if there are wires in the boot. i would check the jacks out with a volt meter. all options failing the fall back is you can tap into the two cables going into the rear doors from the b pillars. pop out the plastic panel and you'll find a twisted pair in each. thats the pair of wires going to each speaker in the rear doors. there's a posting in here that has pictures of this option as well. hope that helps. |

thought of letting eveybody know a bit more about my install:
my overall requirement: 1. I already had a JBL Sub+Amp, so i wasn't going to buy a new one, was gonna get this fixed into the X5. 2. Fixing my massive box consumed space, so I wanted it to be easily removable so that i could just pull it out when boot capacity was needed. So i searched around and found a 60amp Vibe connector that allowed push in/pull out connect/disconnect of ground/+12v/signal; made 2 RCA connections for the sound. all this was fitted on the left hand panel, above the nav cd unit. here are some photos for anybody interested: 1. connection port when the amp+sub are disconnected: 2. amp cables connected to the port: (Vibe fuse unit is on velcro so easily removable. ground and +12v are 4mm cables, non-standard colours as i already had these from a cousin, they're used for communications eqpt racks and rated upto 90c temperature - much better than amp cables so i just used them although colours aren't right) 3. my x5 boot, when the side panel is closed : if i need boot space, the whole unit comes off in a minute and goes into my house! along the way i had major trouble getting noise cancelled, i've learnt a great deal about this subject, so any questions pls ask. happy to help. |

I had to tap in from head unit and ran it back to sub amp. since i needed a remote switch from head unit might as well get all cables from there. Ran it through the centre console, under carpet and rear seat. Have fun

well its all done now!
Thanks everyone for the replies in this thread and others. Jaynana that install is very neat!
I needed up tapping a cable in the rear compartment for the remote wire, the downside to this is I have to use the ACC to have the amp running instead of having the option of just turning the Radio on etc, I can live with this and saved me pulling the entire car apart! I then took the B Pillar cover off and tapped into the speakers for the rear doors there and ran cable through to the rear passenger compartment to my camp which has high level connection option. All working well except Im finding it hard to tune the sound that the bass isn't overpowering everything and finding the sweet spot but all in time! Cheers! |
