Its looking like you have to do it from underneath and remove driveshafts etc. Sorry about that. Im not sure I could be bothered now.

I did a little digging & found a lot of info on this problem with e36s, which I think use the same transmissions. Here are a couple of sites that show steps for the repair & tools to do it. Looks like the trans has to be out of the car for the job because some of it happens on the top of the case and some on the bottom.

How to: Service your transmission shift pins.

2005 6 speed here.

Do any of the OE shifters work in the X5 (ala Z3/M3 shifter in E30) or is this shifter too far from a match for something that is OE and shorter throw?

Well, the saga continues. The wife has been complaining about it popping out of 2nd quite often. I have also noticed the syncros are worn on 2nd and 3rd, so it looks like the 'box will be out and a rebuild is on the way. I am now in search of an aftermarket rebuild kit, as to buy the parts genuine from BMW Australia is cost prohibitive. I have searched for a kit on the web and registered on bimmerfoums and I still come up empty handed. My brain hurts. I have all the tools and experience to do this, I just cant push the right buttons on the keyboard to find the parts.

BTW, nice to meet you racebmwm3, I wish I had a 6 speel. LOL.

Welcome and thanks for posting! Where in Jersey are you at? Jealous of your "bonus cog" with the 6 speed.

And as far as short shifters go, you're stuck. There was a thread about UUC making a custom run for the 5 speeds I believe, but its damn near close to 400 bucks and it's almost been a year and still no one has reported taking delivery of the shifter.

I'll stick to my normal 5 speed throws, I miss the old days when it cost 100 bucks for shorter throws in a VW.

I didn't hafta' pre-pay, fwiw. Given the time passed, I presume it's a no-joy - no idea how many Rob needed to go through with it. Last time I bothered to call they were 'moving' and planned to get after it when they had their new tooling & fab shop.

Too bad, my third shifts are getting suckage, woulda' been nice to kill two birds (three with the zuch) with one service bill <sigh>.

so, as far as I or anyone knows, UUC is out to pasture, though I've not bothered to call and get the "we're gonna get after it tomorrow" report lately.
