mobile 1 high mileage oil

I have 80000 mileage on my 2001 x5 4.4.im using bmw 5w30 oil.It appears that my upper timing chain gasket is leaking.Considering my mileage should i switch to mobile 1 high mile oil.The leak is very minor and wandering if the heavier oil would stop it as well be just better for age of the engine. Thanks

My 01 4.4 has 127k on it and has had nothing but bmw 5w30 full synthetic in it since brand new. I don't think changing the viscosity of the oil will help with the leak.

I been using this on my other car (turbo) for over 5 or more years, works great

It doesn't primarily stop leaks from being 10W-30 vs. 5W-30- it does it by including a seal conditioner in the oil formula.

I am curious also to know if this oil is safe to use on our Xs.

I am nervous about oils that have specific additives designed to swell up seals. I don't think it is a sound engineering approach. All seals won't react the same, or to the same degree, and some seals may be damaged by those additives. If they only put a small enough amount in to be safe then I wouldn't expect much if any benefit. That makes it more of a marketing campaign than a valuable product.

10w30 has no benefit over 5w30 for this objective; they are both a 30 weight when warm, which is when oil would be consumed. The 10w is just thicker when cold, and so can increase cold start wear.
