'STOP ENGINE, LOW OIL PRESSURE'... comes and go...

Hi I have a X5 2001 4.4i model, these couple of months I've been getting this message on the cluster 'STOP ENGINE, LOW OIL PRESSURE'. I checked the oil level and it's fine. But I still get these message every now and again. Most of the time I just turn the ignition off and turn it back ON and somehow the message just disappeared. Any idea???

What picture are you talking about? Do you mean 'The message' itself?

probably a dodgy sensor, or mucky oil filter. When was it last serviced?

you did check the oil level properly I assume, i.e. on the flat and it was near the top of the marks.

Yep, I have been doing the oil level checking on a flat surface. Not just once, but many times now and I don't believe that the oil level has dropped to a significant level for it to give me the "message". I last serviced the car less than 6 months ago. My first thought would be the sensor as well at the bottom of the pan. I have spent a lot of 'dosh' on this X and I'm trying to go for the cheapest option as I possibly can. Somebody is selling the sensor in eBay for £70 and I can get the oil filter from Europarts around £7-£8 if I'm not mistaken.

Right.. I got you now. I haven't got the chance to take a picture of the message since whenever it happens, the X prompts me to stop the engine. This is what it exactly shows on the cluster 'STOP ENGINE LOW OIL PRESSURE'

And when I turn the ignition OFF, the message changes to 'CHECK ENGINE OIL'. That's it. And then when I start it up again, the message just disappears. As I said this message comes and goes. Somedays it come up and somedays it don't.

there is a pressure relief valve on oil pump that can cause problems, sump pan needs removing to access, manual available from www.benltleypublishers.com shows specific proceedure to service valve.

I didn't know there was an oil pressure sensor, just an oil level sensor, that generated an error code.
