4.4i Engine Noise - You tube links

Hi,

My X5 makes a strange noise when started in the mornings (or generally when cold) and Ive recorded two videos of it.

First vid is starting only and small amount of reving the engine (Im never keen reving an engine from cold so its only up to around 2000rpm)

The second vid was taken after the first and is the car being started and reversed out of my driveway to turn.

Although not apparent in these videos Ive noticed that sometimes when starting from cold the car does not like to rev above 2000 and appears to want to stall out. After a minute approx its perfect.

2001 X5 4.4i (e53) being started from cold and reversed out of driveway (NO VIDEO) - YouTube

A bit of history on the car. Its low miles at 53000, 2001, in the last year been driven 7000miles. Only probelm in its history I know of similar to this was the EML on last year that was switched of by a specialist Indie who also re-mapped it to ensure it was ok as the car previously had been sitting up for a while not having been driven due to family circumstances.

Is the noise I hear something simple like a squeky pulley prehaps or the start of something more serious such as Vanos etc.

Ive looked on a few posts and see different faults causing startiing noises such as Vanos, bad hoses, needing re-tune, CCV, coil packs.

I was going to check hoses etc later today but thought it a good idea in the meantime to put it out there for others views.

Im handy with a car but have no experience on these engines so any advice appreciated.

The car currently belongs to a friend of mine and Im considering purchasing it from him. I know its not a good idea to buy from friends sometimes but this is why I have a loan of it so I can make sure Im 100% with things before buying and have had it for a week now. The symptons above have been there for around a year now but they always put it down to being a big engine needing time to "settle" first thing and get oil up round etc. It has got no worse or better in that time. A few times in very cold weather the EML light flicked on and off also but it had not been on again now in the past 7 months.

Any advice appreciated.

1) do NOT buy a car from a friend that you would like to keep as a friend.
2) if you Must buy a car from a friend, ASSSS-UME it is like any good jaguar or lambo and was delivered broken and will need constant and expensive attention & repair to keep it operating as other people's Honda's and Toyotas.

If number 2 is true and you cannot abide by the proscribed conditions, travel to your local pistol shooting range, fill out all necessary paperwork, then eat a bullet.

good luck and hope it was a laugh - old joke.

Words of wisdom

I know its not a good idea, although this will be the 3rd car I will be buying from him if I do the deal, so we do both go in with and following rule number 2. Would just like to gauge how much Love and attention above the expected I would have to Lavish on this beast due to the little noises it whispers out in the YT vid

You should take off all the belts, then start it up. Let us know if the sound is still there.

If the noise was still there with belts off what would that be suggesting.

I only ask as, although I will try to get the belts off, I may not be able to get it done as soon as I would like as the car is not yet mine so worst case scenario is what Im thinking.

Ill try to pull them off tomorrow though and see how it goes.

:-)

Thanks

I doubt the noise will still be there as it sounds like, belts, pulleys, tensioner, and/or any of the pumps. You need to get the belts off and then hand spin the pulleys and pumps when the car is off. You will feel what's dead pretty easy then. You need to check for play, and smooth rotation.

If the sound is there when you take belts off, you have a problem, as the noise can be internal.

Great, thanks for the advice. I'll try to pull the belts of tomorrow.

On another issue, I noticed that the idle appeared low. What should it sit at. Mines at 500ish. I was driving today when going round a car park on tickover when the car stalled due to low revs and me turning the steering combined caught it enough to cut out.

Seems that when slowing down the revs drop of and the car just catches them on time to stop it stalling. This time it missed it.

Any thoughts on where to look first?

I know an indie BMW guy remapped it previously to stock settings so perhaps just get it redone?

Really sound like you may have a failing alternator. But you need to start with taking off the belts.

Have tested the voltage?

Thanks, that sound reasonable considering the symptoms. I havent checked much yet as with the car not being mine Im trying to decide to buy it or not.

At this stage Im just trying to get an idea of what to look at to save a bit of time when it come to pulling things apart.

Really appreciate all the advice and Ill update the post when I have more info.

Thanks again.

Paul
