Need advice quick on cylinder misfire.....I have pulled coil pack

Had a code for misfire on cylinder 8. Pulled 7 and 8 to swap out to see if a coil pack was bad.

When I pulled 8 out there was oil on the end of the coil pack. I assume this is not good or a spark plug has gone bad. Vehicle still runs fine and no sounds or gas mileage issues.

Any help as to what todo next?

Thanks

Shawn

Oil on the plug means leaking valve cover gasket. Maybe oil is getting into the coil/plug contact. But that would require a massive leak.

Or a small leak and a long time.

The solution is valve cover gaskets, spark plugs and at least 1 coil pack

Shawn,

You didnt answer if switching the coil moved the code to the 7 Cyl. If it did, then yes, replace the coil. And I concur with the above about the oil. My ports were so full of oil, oil started to seep out at the 4 and 8 cyl ports.

I got it all back together and swapped the 7 and 8 coil pack but the code is still on. I will have it checked later today when the rain quits.

The oil was on the bottom of the coil pack stem so it was not a lot and only a small amount was in the stem from just being there for some time.

The car seems to run a little smoother but that is hard to tell as mentally you feel that it should if the oil was causing an issue.

Any ideas on how to get the oil out before pulling the plug. I should know later today if the coil pack is bad or if it is the plug.

Also, what should I expect cost wise for gasket replacement or can I do it myself.

I will update this afternoon and thanks for all the comments!!!

You can suck the oil out using a shop vac. I didn't see you mention anywhere how many miles were on the X. If it is over 65k, I would consider doing the sparks and gaskets. For the dealer to do it, expect a bill anywhere from $500 to $1k. An indy can do it for $400 or so. But if you do it yourself, you can spend $150.00 or so for the parts and depending on how mechanically inclined you are, you can expect a couple hours worth of work. I can get this job done start to finish in about an hour and a half. Some have taken over 2 hours because the VC is just seized on the block and is a pain to take off.

Let me know if you need help.

The X has 162,000 miles on it and I need to get all the records from the previous dealer to see when they were last replaced. It has been serviced from day 1 from the dealer and was one of the reasons I purchased it.

If there is a post or a video on how to replace the gaskets I can probably do it myself with the right tools and time. Once you figure out the coil packs, and how to get to them, changing the plugs is relatively simple.

Granted, it won't be as easy as my 86 Mustang V8, since I can just about sit in the engine compartment, but I like doing things if I can.

Thanks,
Shawn

getting to the coils and plugs is easy. Just get yourself a nice assortment of extensions. A magnet for pulling sockets out of holes, and for pulling the plugs out. I've seen DIYs on gasket changes. Search for them, I'm sure there are a few.

You can check the coil with a multimeter. Set it to ohms and pit the probes on the outer two contacts. You should have a reading of .4 to .7 mega ohms or there abouts . Anything out of that range and the coil is dud.

Had the code pulled again today and still getting a misfire on cylinder 8. I am going to pull the plug to check it out and then replace them.

I know there are many post out there on what plugs to use but anyone running something the like on a 4.6 that they feel worked well.

Thanks,

Shawn
