Smile new to X5, already love/hate

Hi all
Was not seriously looking for an X5, but found one in good condition priced at "fu(k it, I'll roll the dice..."

2001 X5 3.0
220,000km

I really love driving the car, the ride is excellent and power OK. I have owned Lexus RX300, Grand Cherokee, Suburban, RAV4 and Acura MDX and find the BMW a lot nicer as a daily. So far not quite as reliable tho'

When I got it, the ABS/brake/traction control lights all lit, but since I learned to drive when disc brakes were something to brag about, I didn't care if ABS failed.

My current issues that I care about and am hoping to get some help are:

1 - wipers sometimes work, sometimes don't. When they do work it is single speed all the time. When not working, they can stop at pretty much any part of the sweep. Also when stopped the sprayers quit. I am kind of thinking the switch on steering column?

2 - CEL codes p0171, po174 p1083 p1085 - assuming vacuum leak from other postings here. Is there a common failure point on the 3.0?

3 - p0369 - cam sensor B circuit - I have Bentley manual so can likely find/fix this easily.

4 - is there an easy way to disable seat memory? I am only driver and would prefer things stay where I last left them, not adjust to some useless default.

I do have plans to convert to LPG/Autogas if I can be reasonably confident of getting a few years out of this car.

TIA

If there is a cam sensor code fix that first and yes, mixture/vacuum leak codes there are a lot of postings already. Are you saying the seat adjusts back to a preset ? Then seat memory is probably working with the key and you just need to save your setting. Usually the seat won't retain any memory or won't adjust at all if there is an issue with the controller AFAIK. Definitely fix the Trifecta lights! The traction control works very well on these!

For the trifecta (ABS, traction, brake) I have my money on the steering angle sensor... I know that for others (many?) it was the ABS unit, but in my case it was the steering angle sensor. See my post on that, it is easy to inspect (easier than having to send the ABS unit to a repair and wait to see what they say).

For finding the vacuum leak, I suggest a smoke test. It should take a few minutes to put together a "home version" of a smoke machine and to test it. I completely eliminated those on mine that way. There are several versions of the machine, I built one similar to this one, cant find the video of the one I built.

Having said that, I think the car is a joy to drive but can be a real money pit, especially at this age...

- Re Steering Wheel and Memory Seat.

- I pulled Fuse #26 (Green color) and label it using masking tape "SW Fuse 26".
I leave this fuse in the front "ashtray" area, this way I can easily reinsert it to adjust SW or seat. Since I am the only driver, I have not needed to reinsert this fuse in the last 6 years!

The only show stopper at present is the mis-behaving wipers. I live on the wet-coast and they are an absolute necessity here.

I have narrowed it down to either the column switch or the general module - I am leaning toward the GM as when it stops I lose front wipers AND spray - the rear wiper will continue to operate as normal. According to the Bentley, the stalk switches drive the rear wiper module directly, but front module routes through GM.

I know of other situations for vehicle controllers where solder connections crack and functionality is intermittent. I am curious in anyone has encountered similar in BMW?

TIA
Ken

ISTA+ for diagnostics

Hi again

Does anyone know if the ISTA+ software can run diags on items like the General Controller or steering angle sensor?

I have a fair bit of PC savvie and don't expect problems with install.

Or is there a better/more comprehensive kit available? I have seen a lot of references to various other diagnostics and coding kits, but they seem a hodge-podge such as a box just for new key coding, glorified OBDII stuff (already have a Bluedriver that work for that) etc.

Have started a list of Preventative fixes such as checking DISA, building smoke tester, replacing subframe bushings etc.

TIA
Ken

Look at the Foxwell NT-530 diagnostic tool, about $150 US with BMW-specific diagnostic software and can work with other manufacturers as well with purchase of other manufacturer specific software. I have the BMW software on my PC as well and the Foxwell is WAY easier to use and I have not found any diagnostics it cannot handle, though others may prefer and suggest the PC based software. Good luck.

By the way, the previous version is the 520, best I can tell is the difference is the ability to work with Nissan and maybe another manufacturer or two and the 520 will be a little less expensive.

Thanks for the input; I don't mind laying out the cash for something that makes life a lot easier.

cheers
