Oil leak? Skid plate removal?

Greetings,

I had the X parked in the garage over the weekend....too many cars....and I noticed 4 small oil drops about the size of a quarter in a square pattern. It sat for about 3 days without being cranked or moved.

When looking underneath it appears there is a skid plate covering the bottom of the vehicle so I cannot see where the leak is coming from. I assume the oil pan is above the plate and would be the first place to look with 164,000 miles.

Am I correct that you have to remove this plate somehow to get a good look. I do not have any leaks showing where I park on a daily basis as it is not there but overnight.

Thanks for any help! Hope to replace my bad spark plug this weekend since I might actually have time.

Yes, and they are one time use bolts/nuts. The torque spec of 41 ft/lbs (stage 1) then 90 degrees (stage 2) deforms them and renders them useless after removal.

That sucks. Did you have to buy new ones from the stealer?

Yes, they were suprisingly inexpensive though. I replaced mine when I drained/refilled my front diff. If you remove the plate be sure to do everything you want to do B4 re-installing it, fluid changes, inspections, cleaning, front sway bar bushings......

How are those bolts rendered useless. I have re-used them 3 times so far. I actually didn't know they were one time use.

The torque spec (stage 1, 41ft/lbs then stage 2, 90 degrees) stretches the bolts and deforms the nut thread. Have you re-installed these each time to the tq spec? If you have they should have snapped or stripped by now. You've reused them 3 times (90 deg x 3) BMW installed new (90 deg) = 360 deg (full revolution of fastener after the first stage of TQ spec., there is almost no spring back of steel bolts.

No I just straight tightened them with impact, with a 120ft-lb torque stick.

The sheer fact that they should have been useless from the get-go, is worrying me that they are not original.

Just pulled out the Bentley manual, Quote from 310-2, Front End Reinforcement Plate, removing and installing......"WARNING, DO NOT REUSE FASTENERS. THEY ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED ONLY ONCE AND MAY FAIL IF REUSED. REPLACE WITH NEW."

Time for new ones installed with the 90 deg stretch so they can properly transfer subframe load to the stiffener plate as BMW designed.
