From Cayenne Turbo to X5 4.8is...

Hi all:

Nice to be back... I've been a thorough reader for a while now, eventhought I've never written until today.

I'm from Madrid, Spain, and currently own a lovely 2008 Cayenne Turbo.

However, I just got a good offer on the Cayenne, which I might sell. I'm looking for a substitute, and the first one to come to mind is the X5 4.8is, which I've always loved.

I've checked the forum for threads on the car, and wanted to have all the information possible on faults, problems, etc. on the model.

I know there have been issues with the pano roof... and some issues with the hidraulic suspension as well.

Anything else I should be aware of?

Are those of you who still own a 4.8is happy?

Have there been any issue with the transmission?

Many thank in advance for all your help.

Best.

Hi there!! Many threads you can search on the 4.8is. It's a great sav in my mind but, much the same in owning a home, you will need to put money into it to keep it running and looking good.

Tranny's are hit and miss with these. Most who own a 4.8 have had some sort of tranny issue or are planning ahead to have it replaced/ rebuilt. Suspension and steering components front and rear are always topics of discussion for these models, too.

I love the ride, power and the look of the e53 4.8is.

Good Luck!!

The previous thread is showing all the dirt about the 4.8is. I think if you look up any car on its forum your going to find issues with the car. Overall the 4.8is is a great truck and some of them depending on how they were treated and the mileage tend to have issues as with any other car. If you find a 4.8is that has been maintained has not been beat on and taken care of it's a great truck and can be very reliable. Of course there are some prone problems but it's not like every 4.8is has the problems...it's hit or miss but overall a great truck and alot better looking then the cayenne.

Thank you for the information.

The fact is that my Cayenne has been absolutely faultless during the 18 months (and 20.000 km) I've had it. And as much as I read info on the X5 4.8is, I'm getting pretty scared, specially with the air suspension issues...

In the worst case scenario, if ever I get a 4.8is and have suspension problems, what would be the highest price to pay? are there aftermarkets options that would eliminate the air suspension and just replace it with normal shocks and springs?

On the other hand, what's your take on the 4.6is? and the M5 e39?

Thank you all again for the help.

You can replace the entire air suspension with the regular springs and struts from a 4.4i if you choose to do so.

Recent threads on SLS problems point to battery and alternator problems that show up as SLS issues. I would bet that this is another one of those problems that is easily misdiagnosed and throwing meachical parts at it gets expensive quickly.

My SLS started to act up and a week later my battery collapsed. I replaced the battery and checked the compressor, the valve block and the sensors. None of which were at fault. When I drove out to have the dealer reset the EHC, it came back to life half-way there and it has not been a problem in the last couple of weeks.

I believe someboby else reported poor regulator performance after an SLS/TPMS fault showed up. I don't think the SLS should be an impediment. Nevertheless, there are some issues with the transmision and the engine that seem scary.

Thanks for the info.

Could you be more specific on those transmission and engine potential issues?

Best.
