I guess what confused me is Lemans stated above that the 01-03 already have H3 projectors where my 03 has the H11 reflector style. And why cant I just buy the projector housings and use my H11 bulbs?

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
because the projector housings are designed to accept a different H3 bulb, the reflector housings are a H11 bulb which is a different base, although maybe you could rig it to work, I doubt it.

i have both at hand, I will try to take a picture of the back for comparison. The projector housing is longer (2x longer) and is fully encapsulated, the H3 bulb inside is not hermetically sealed, as it does not have a rubber seal, so the outer shell seals the bulb inside the housing, and the shell has a connector plug.

The H11 bulb has a rubber seal at its base, and the bulb plugs into the housing while its base is sticking outside the housniig for the connector to connect directly to the bulb.

Here's a pic of the non-projector fogs - no cap (notice they're shorter too):

Here's the projector type with cap (and longer):

Because those numbers (H3 , H11, etc) are not really bulb types but SOCKET/CONNECTOR types. So, unless you want to try and use some kind of adapters and try to make it all fit properly in the housing - there really isn't a good reason to do this (use H11 connectors on the projectors).

Its easier/cleaner to stay with the H3.

However, since one way or the other you will have to do some cutting. I would upgrade to the HID ballasts and bulbs while you're at it.

both units made by the same manufacturer, Valeo, the tab at the top of the both housings is at the same location, so it would fit into the same slit in the body/frame of the car, but the projector is longer, as it was stated already, and the free form is shorter - the short one easily clears that air channel I was takling about, the long one is pushing into that channel... The channel tube is hard plastic, and does not "give", so I wonder if there are any options left... Cutting the air channel ($200 as per RealOEM) does not look like a good idea, even though I don't think it would seriously compromise the operation of the car... Or, would it?

If you don't need much clearance, IIRC the airchannel will give some and I don't think it will affect performance.

If you need more clearance than that then you might try modifying the end cap to get the clearance you need.

Are you upgrading to HID at the same time?

No HID at this moment but it is not off the table - gotta space myself on those upgrades, a man can go broke real fast with all the toys... lol...

I got the fogs to stay on with the high beams, so, when flashing the high beams for passing, the fogs will not counter flash, which would have been bad for the HID bulbs and ballasts - that is good SW upgrade that I could not perform on the 4.6, as the LKM there did not support that feature...

So, eventually the HIDs will creep their way into the fogs, just don't tell my wife... yet... hahahaha

Don't know how inexpensive those caps are but you might try cutting them down some (lots of work involved). If you need a LOT more room then not sure if you have a choice. You may just have to modify the airchannel.

I'd like to upgrade to HID fogs, can someone recommend a good source to purchase from. Also do they come with error cancelling module?

you don't need the error cancelling module, just set the Cold monitoring for the NSW (fog lights) to nicht_activ in the LCM programming, and it will not monitor the light bulbs in the fog lights... you can leave the Hot monitoring on, and it will continue to monitor the operation of the HIDs when they are on.

You will need the NCS Expert software and iBus connection, or if anyone in your town can do it for a fee or free (of course someone in NYC can do it for you!!!).

also, while doing the programming, make sure that you set the fogs to operate at the same time as the high beams, to avoid burning up the ballast during flashing of the high beams...

these three need to be set to nicht_active
