I can't recall if there are any HID kits that DON'T require some kind of error cancelling harness. I used a kit from DDM tuning and its still going strong.

However, you might want to search, as there have been many threads on this, to see if you may have a preference. There are some good DIY threads on this mod/upgrade.

I think if you stay with a major brand you should be okay, regardless.

Don't know which housing you have (projector or non) but there seems to be just a little bit more work adding HID to the projector housings - but not much more really.

Good luck and if you have more questions, post up!

Thanks for replying Jose. I have projector fogs and have decided to opt out the HID mod for my foggies. I purchased a pair of PIAA's yellow H3's and they are working extremely well.

here are original, OE BMW fog lights, one came off the 4.6iS, that is the longer one, and the other one is off 4.8iS. If you notice, the plastic tab on both lights is at the same absolute location (I tried to get the screwdriver to point to the tab, it kept rolling). So, this would allow them to be interchangeable, plus the electrical connector needs to be replaced.

The second picture shows the projector installed on the left, driver's side and the free-form still on the right side. The picture does not do the justice but the top cut-off line is more pronounced on the projector light and a bit blurry on the free-form.

The right side is still not installed as the airchannel is still on the way. I got this time deeper, and tried to see how much it can wiggle... It seems that there might be some wiggling room, I just need to renew my membership in the "BUSTED KNUCKLES SOCIETY", and get down dirty...

clockwork, sorry for belated response, just saw this question...

I bought 2 of 61 13 8 373 332 which are the housings for the connector and 4 of 61 13 0 007 256, which are contacts for the housings, both items from a dealer, about $8 in total... you also might need grommets, i have a bunch of them i bought long time ago from a dealer, i don't remember part numbers, but you can check with a dealer about those.. they are like a few pennies each...

I did not make a harness, i just cut off the old connectors and crimped the new connectors onto the wires - you, however, may wish to make the harness that go from H11 type connector to the projector connector. you will need to source the H11 male connectors, should be freely available on the bay...

Term X, its all good. I just got my order of the ellipsoid's harness and wires last week. I ordered/received H11 connectors and pins off e-bay. I was gonna make them last weekend but no time, so I hope to next week and fit the ellipsoids into my face lifted X.
I just hope the hallogen bulbs focal length fit the cut off pattern better than any HID bulbs I've put in there. seems the focal point of the HID's I've bought are te wrong length and therefore the light dispersion is disgusting and no good cut off can be made, so I'm resorting back to hallogens. I thought it was just a crappy set of DEPO fog lamps 2 years ago when I did theis same mod, but I returned them and now when I bought another set, the fog lights are giving me the same grief in regards to fitting in a HID bulb. I do not know how others have done it successfully. my lighting result was garbage.

Hey T,

About to pull a trigger on a set of these Ellipsoid fogs on the bay, the Depo set is about 100 bucks shipped so prices definitely came down.

For a stock vehicle are these the adapters I would need? Ellipsoid take 9006 male connector and I would plug H11 female connector into stock wiring, correct?

Basically its the opposite connection of this adapter shown, he said he does have available though 9006 male to H11 female. H11 to 9006 Bulb Model Conversion Pigtail Harness Sockets Plugs GTI BMW Adapter | eBay

Thanks!

RB, the pigtail on the ebay link does not look like the connector for the ellipsoid light housing... Now, I am talking about the OE housing, and this is the connector that goes to the car - Google Image Result for http://c1552172.r72.cf0.rackcdn.com/55768_x800.jpg. I am not sure if the DEPO is using the same connector as the factory or if they are using more of a industry standard connectors... but, if you look at the connector in my link, you will see that the prongs are oriented horizontally as opposed to vertically in the pigtail link on ebay...

you have a 2003 model - don't you have factory projectors already??

nope 2003 was the year changed to reflector fogs with H11, I got screwed with reflector fogs and permasealed headlights!

Note that the link above will not show the correct connector, the picture in that link is H11 male to 9006 female, that is meant for cars converting from 9006 fog lights to H11 fog lights.

The pigtail I would purchase is reversed for our application, 9006 male connection (to ellipsoid housing) and H11 female connection (to plug into stock wiring) He says he has both available.

EDIT: T, I think I know what you're saying now, with the BMW connector being a non-conventional standard connector. I was going to just make a pigtail to not modify the stock wiring, but I think I will have to cut the stock connector off and just get the pins/connectors from parts dept

but that is what i am wondering about - the factory ellipsoid housing is NOT 9006 plug... the H11 pn the car's side is the correct one.. but the OE projector is using that connector in my link... However, I do not know about the DEPO housing - the DEPO might be 9006... is it?
