A bit late, but those were my thoughts as soon as I saw it - great write up though.

I will be recovering all the pillars and sunroof cover in beige suede though in the weeks to come!
Funnily enough my factory interior is just that, beige with black from the pillars up - and I think it looks great

Ok as promised. Here we go. My headliner finally gave up the ghost, I was going nuts with little sags above the visors and the rear hump. Ordered some foam backed suede, and a bunch of headliner glue. I am not going to recommend the place it got it from, only because the stuff was a bitch to use. I got everything from yourautotrim.com.

The suede is not stretchy for shit. It took a lot of force, and muscle to get it into the huge pockets that we have on our headliner. The glue that they provide is also a joke, yea it won't bleed through for shit, but you have very little work time, and you need a shit load of pressure to get it to stick. I essentially killed 3 cans of glue, and got half the headliner done. I was also not really happy that I was able to peel the material off fairly easy. I went out, and got 3m yellow. Now that is the sauce. One can got everything glued up, and you will not be able to remove it once it is glued.

Anyway.

Screw chart that I made to keep these in one area. I do this all the time, and I recommend this for anyone taking out a shit ton of screws. Obviously this is not the full list, because quite a few screws stay in place, like the oh shit handles, and the visor hinge. Screws do not fall out, so may as well leave them there.

Took me exactly 1 hour and 5 minutes from when I got to the garage, to get to this stage. It was easier than I anticipated. I was on such a roll, that I figured I would be driving by evening. Was I in for a surprise.

Shit got real here. I peeled the material, and the old foam (aka Devil Shit) stayed in place. As a matter of fact, the glue under the foam was still sticky, so much so, that this shit turned into little balls of crap that got stuck to everything. Floor, tools, clothes, sneaker tread. Everything. Lots of swearing here. Must have taken 2 hours to get this guy cleaned up.

As stated above, the material was a literal bitch to use, and the glue was shit. Once switched to 3M, flew through this part.

Trim stuff off, glue over the edges and sunroof lip. The pano roof hole was actually surprisingly easy in comparison to the front part of the headliner. lots of relief cuts. Cut all the holes, and ready to install. Oh yeah, blades. I was trying to save as many blades as possible, but you still go through about 10 for this job. You just can't cut with a dull blade.

Installed. This took a long time, 3 hours about. Why, well because removing it is much easier than installing, especially when you are holding it with your head and forget to remove door seals and use those to support it for you somewhat, while trying to thread in handles or anything to help support it. Then getting the B, C and D pillars to line up with the clips was also no joke.

So for some hints. I did not break or lose any clips.

Installation is reverse of removal, except, do yourself a favor, and remove the door seals at least on the tops, so that you can snap those in, and they will help support the headliner along with those clips around the pano hole.

DO NOT FORGET TO PUNCH HOLES FOR THE VISOR CLIP. Yea I forgot, because it is not a hole you cut out, it is two holes per side. I had to get a screw in there, feel out the holes, and push screw in from the top, oh I realized this when the headliner was in the car already, and most of the stuff installed. I installed everything from the rear toward the front.

Pano sun shade is next. Looks like I have to take off the glass, and pull the shades out from the top.

Finished pic looks funny and sorta wrinkly, but that is just the suede. Looks and feels very nice once I vacuumed it.

^Thanks for posting Slick - you have more balls than me - I have 3 gouges in mine from my dumbass renting an aerator, the wheel chocks slipped and I had to stop suddenly, I half caught it with my hand but the top handle gouged in 2 spots just before the dome/sunroof cover, and there are 2 gouges at the rear too. I was hoping to find someone who could make it look 80% with some black thread and some spray glue as its just got a rip, no sags or anything, most places want to R&R and recover the whole thing ($550-600)

Not worth it to me and its not easy finding one locally at a wrecker (not like I can just toss a spare headliner in my backseat LOL) - so I'll check a couple other places to see if they can repair it before I just say screw it and do what you did - however I definitely will get stretch suede, and yes I did a headliner once on my 99 Jetta, and I remember for sure the 3M spray glue was what I used (Super 77 was it, or Super 90?)

The whole thing cost me just over $100. Just bite the bullet and do it. No matter how you slice it, every x5 I have seen the shit starts sagging. It’s not scary at all. Just get the spandex one for sure. If you do that, I’m sure you can get it all done in 4-5 hours. Lots of hints in this thread and you can always ask more.

I plan on selling my x toward end of the year, and still decided to do this, was driving me crazy. Going x5m baby.

3M spray adhesive is the way to go . without it its just a sticky headliner waiting to come down. On a hot day in Texas if you didn't use the 3M you could come out to the parking lot to find your new headliner in the seats.

Will do man! So did you get all the old foam and glue off and what did you use? I know its a fiberglass board so just curious - shit the old days on my Jetta I remember gluing the suede over the existing headliner I didn't even peel the old one off LOL
