Long Trip Stats & Accident Report

I am the kind always interested in the stats of my cars, so here's what I got on my trip from SF to LA this last week.

2005 X5 3.0i - 18k miles, 5 passengers with luggage

Distance traveled - 380 miles
Miles per Gallon - 22.4 mpg
Speed - between 70-90 mph, averaging about 80-85 most of the way

But on the way back, I only got 21 mpg, don't know why except maybe the incline on the grapevine is steeper from LA to SF.

The X did real well considering I drove through couple of major storms. I love the seats in the car, did not get fatique at all with the lower lumbar support.

On the way down I5, saw an accident like right out of the movies. I was two cars behind this black mid size car, don't remember the model, but could be a Honda Accord or a BMW 3-series. I5 is a straight level freeway, two lanes on each side, separated by a 50 feet grass / plant median with no barriers.

We were traveling about 85 mph on the left lane. All of a sudden this car veers onto the median and I thought he decided to make a u-turn on the interstate! But he went straight on the median, all the way to the other side, then veer back towards our lane, all the while maintaining the 85 mph speed. Then I thought, what a clown!

He merged back onto traffic, we were all watching him obviously and gave him lots of room. He cuts across both lanes, went up the right bank, crosses over the right side median, flips on the roof, and then back on its wheels.

I think the guy must have had a heart attack and had his car on cruise control because I saw no brake lights whatsoever, and the car maintained speed.

I called 911 right away and hope that he was ok. But I have a feeling that he did not make it and felt bad the whole trip down. I wanted to pull over and help, but by the time he flipped, I was past him and others were slowing down to help.

I have never seen a car going that fast and flip before, just like the movie, and when it flipped, it look like it was going in slow motion.

Stay safe out there!

I made the exact same trip this holiday season. However it was only me and my wife, but with a lot of luggage and presents (back seats folded down to fit everything). We got a little bit better mpg that you, but not by much, and I was going about the same speeds. And yes, the X is VERY comfy.

22 m/g sounds great.
I wanted to share my long trip stats.
X5 3.0i 8k miles. Bought in july.
I checked the milage On my trip from Dallas to Kansas City - about 500 miles one way. Was not happy with what I found. Got 17 mile/gallon around the same in city driving. I averaged 75 to 80 miles/hr. top speed 90 mls/hr.
I use 91 or 93 octane gas.
I consoled myself saying that it has not "broken in". May be it takes 10K to 15k miles to "brake in".

Do you see anything wrong with my X5.
Thanks

That was the best mileage I got on any trip except for a return trip from Tahoe where I got 26 mpg going downhill! Curious what you are getting in the City. I think I am getting 12-13 climbing up and down the hills in SF.

The other good thing about our car is that I did not need to fill up until I got to LA and I only used 3/4 tank, so I could have gone about 500 miles on a full tank. Gas is going for around $2.30 to $2.40 per gallon in SF and LA, but on I5, they were selling for $2.79 to $2.95 per gallon!

That's what I call "highway robbery"!

I found that "The Wind Factor" has alot to do with your mpg on any given trip since the X isn't very aerodynamic. My past holiday trip from LA to Sacramento averaged 20.0mpg (not much wind and with my snowboard mounted on top of the X as well as lots of luggage). My return trip, however, only averaged 18.5mpg in windy conditions (the X weighted less on the return trip and I even stowed my board inside). On some trips, I got as high as 26-27mpg! But I guessed those were with lots of tailwinds

When I picked up my 2001 X5 in July and drove it from NYC to Idaho, I got 18-20 - the variation most likely due to different brand gas and terrain - with the Dinan setup, I'm down only about a 1/2 mile, 17.5-19.5 - around town 15-17 - the computer tells me I get a respectable 15mpg cruising at 100-120mph

That was me! What are the odds!?! Everything's fine now. I was digging for change under the seat. That and all the cough syrup and vodka I drank didnt help either.

gas mileage

My '05 X now has 11,000 miles, and I think not yet fully broken in. Nevertheless, my trip mileage has been as high as 25, with normal being 22-23. The wind DOES make a difference, especially out on the interstates. Here in WNY, we do get some strong westerly winds and driving head on into it can make a 2-4 mpg difference. Crossing the mid-western states is the same. On my trips west from Buffalo, I'm always driving head on into the wind and mileage is 20-22. Coming back, the wind is behind us and we get 24-25. Speed is also a significant factor-made moreso when we are fighting the wind. Cross-wind is a major factor, also, as when you are sawing at the wheel to remain on a steady forward line, the speed scrubs off as the wind pushes you to the side. You then press harder on the accel pedal, and burn more fuel. Even so, I am impressed with the X mileage. Given weight and profile, anything more than 22 is D--- good. Try it in a Explorer or Tahoe! BTW, I follow the local dealer's advice on fuel, and we are using mid-grade in both cars. No noticeable diff in performance. BTW#2, we get as high as 32-34 in the 330 at 80-90 mph.We are more than satisfied with these cars.
